Area, Perimeter, Circumference, and Volume of 2D and 3D Figures

1. Introduction to 2D and 3D Figures

2D Shapes: Flat shapes with two dimensions – length and width. Examples include squares, rectangles,
triangles, circles, etc.

3D Shapes: Solid figures with three dimensions – length, width, and height. Examples include cubes,
rectangular prisms, spheres, cylinders, and cones.

2. Perimeter of 2D Figures
The perimeter is the distance around a 2D shape.
Formulas:
Square: 4 times side
Rectangle: 2( length + width)
2(6 + 4)
20 cm
Triangle: sum of three sides of a triangle
Example Problem:
Find the perimeter of a rectangle with a length of 6 cm and width of 4 cm.
3. Area of 2D Figures
- The area is the amount of space inside a 2D shape.
Formulas:
Square: A= (4cm)^2 cm = 16 cm^2
Rectangle: A = length times width
Triangle: ½ (base times height)

Circle: π r 2 = 3.14(r)^2

Example Problem:
Calculate the area of a triangle with a base of 8 cm and a height of 5 cm.

4. Circumference of a Circle
The circumference is the distance around a circle.
Formula: 2 πr ∨πd

Example Problem:
Find the circumference of a circle with a radius of 7 cm.

5. Volume of 3D Figures
Volume is the amount of space inside a 3D shape.
Formulas:

Cube: V =side3

Rectangular Prism: V = length times width times height

Cylinder: V =π r 2 h= (3.14 ) ( 3 )2 ( 10 )=( 3.14 )( 90 )=¿

Sphere: V = πr
3
1 2
Cone: V = π r h
3
Example Problem:
Calculate the volume of a cylinder with a radius of 3 cm and height of 10 cm.

6. Surface Area of 3D Figures

Surface area is the total area of all the faces of a 3D figure.
Formulas:
Cube: SA=6×side2
Rectangular Prism: SA=2lw+2lh+2wh
Cylinder: SA = 2πr(r + h)
Sphere: SA = 4πr2
4(3.14)(25)= 100(3.14)=
314 cm^2

Cone: πr (r + √ r 2+h 2)

Example Problem:
Find the surface area of a sphere with a radius of 5 cm.

7. Advanced Word Problems

Problem 1: A rectangular garden is 12 meters long and 8 meters wide. A fence is to be built around it.
How much fencing material is needed?
2(12+8)=40m
Problem 2: A cylindrical water tank has a diameter of 14 meters and a height of 10 meters. How much
water can the tank hold?
(3.14) (49)(10)
Problem 3: A box is in the shape of a rectangular prism with dimensions 4 cm by 3 cm by 2 cm. If you
want to wrap it with wrapping paper, how much paper is needed?
2lw+2lh+2wh
2(4)(2) + 2(4)(3) + 2(2)(3)= 16+ 24 + 12 = 52
8. Practice Questions
1. Find the perimeter: A square playground has a side length of 15 meters.
2. Calculate the area: A triangle has a base of 10 cm and a height of 12 cm.
3. Find the circumference: A circular table has a diameter of 1.2 meters.
4. Calculate the volume: A cone has a radius of 4 cm and a height of 9 cm.
5. Surface area: A cube has a side length of 6 cm.
