Constructing Triangles Students Notes
Constructing Triangles Students Notes
1. Draw a line equal to the side of the triangle using a ruler e.g.50 mm. Label your line AB.
2. Place your compass point on A and open it up to a radius equal to the length AB (50
mm). Scribe an arc of this size above (or below) the line.
3. Without changing the span on the compass, place the compass point on B and scribe the
same arc, intersecting with the first arc.
4. Label the point of intersection C. This point is the third vertex of the equilateral triangle.
5. Triangle ABC is the required triangle.
Constructing triangles given SSS (Side-Side-Side)
1. Draw the longest side using a ruler e.g.6 cm. Label your line HJ.
2. Using your ruler, open the pair of compasses to the distance of one of the shorter sides
e.g. 5 cm wide. Draw an arc from point H above the line.
3. Using your ruler, open the pair of compasses to the distance of one of the shorter sides
e.g. 3 cm wide. Draw an arc from point J above the line.
4. Label the point of intersection of the two arcs I. Join point I to points H and J using a
ruler.
5. Triangle HIJ is the required triangle.
1. Draw one of the given sides using a ruler 3 cm (Preferably the longest side). Label your
line e.g. AB
2. Use a compass to construct the required angle at the required end of the side e.g. 30°
angle at point A.
3. Use a ruler to draw a line from A through the 30° construction mark. Make it long.
Label the line AX.
4. Use a ruler to measure and mark off the length of the second side of the triangle (4 cm)
on the line AX. Label that point C.
5. Using the ruler, draw in the third side of the triangle by joining B to C.
6. Triangle ABC is the required triangle.

Constructing triangles given ASA (Angle-Side-Angle)
1. Draw and label the given side using a ruler 5.8cm (e.g. AB).
2. Use a compass to construct the required angle at the indicated end of the side e.g. 60°
angle at point A.
3. Use a ruler to draw a line from A through the 60° construction mark. Make it long.
Label the line AX.
4. Use a compass to construct the required angle at the other end of the given side e.g. 30°
angle at point B.
5. Use a ruler to draw a line through the 30° construction mark. Make it long enough to
intersect line AX. Label the intersection point C..
6. The intersection point C is the third vertex of the required triangle. Label the intersection.
7. Triangle ABC is the required triangle.
