B.tech. V Sem. - Math311 - Numerical Methods HandOut - July 2024
Course Objectives and Scope: The objective of the course is to enable the students to,
1. Understand the fundamentals of numerical methods used for the solution of engineering
problems.
2. Emphasis the importance of errors those are inevitably associated with scientific
computing.
3. Familiarize the student with ideas of convergence analysis of numerical methods.
Learning Outcomes: On completion of the course, the student will be able to,
1. Apply numerical methods to obtain approximate solutions to mathematical problems.
2. Analyze and evaluate the accuracy of common numerical methods.
3. Solve the nonlinear equations, system of linear equations and interpolation problems
using numerical methods with error analysis.
4. Examine the appropriate numerical differentiation and integration methods to solve
engineering problems.
5. Apply the numerical methods to solve differential equations.
Course Content:
Section A Errors analysis: Approximations and round off and truncation errors. Root finding
for nonlinear equations (transcendental and algebraic equations): Iterative method,
Bisection method, Regula-Falsi method, Newton-Raphson’s method, Order of
convergence. Numerical methods for solving system of linear equation, Ill-
conditioning.
Section B Finite differences, Interpolation, Newton’s formula for forward and backward
interpolation, Newton’s general interpolation formula, Lagrange’s interpolation
formula, Numerical differentiation.
Section C Numerical integration; Newton’s cotes quadrature formula, Trapezoidal, Simpson’s
rules. Numerical solution of first and second order differential equations, Euler’s
method, Picard’s method, Runge - Kutta’s method.

Evaluation Policy:
The following components will constitute the Continuous Assessment
NOTE: A student is required to attend all the classes. It is her duty to come in time and take up
all the assignments, tests, quizzes and other components of evaluation on the schedule
dates, time and venue, failing which she would be awarded zero in that component of
evaluation. There is no provision of any re-test/make up.
Consultation Policy:
The students are free to approach the class instructor on any day, and at any time during the
Institute hours for removal of their difficulties or any guidance, with prior information.
