NUMBER PATTERNS

PART ONE
REVISION OF LINEAR NUMBER PATTERNS

In Grade 10 we dealt with linear number patterns

having a general term of the form 𝑇𝑛 = 𝑏𝑛 + 𝑐

Example 1

Consider the following linear number pattern:

2 ; 7 ; 12 ; 17 ; ………………….

(a) Determine the nth term and hence the 199th term.

(b) Which term of the number pattern is equal to 497?

Example 2

Consider the following linear number pattern:

3; 5; 7; 9 .......................
(a) Determine the nth term and hence the 180th term.
(b) Which term of the number pattern is equal to 241?

Example 3

Consider the following linear number pattern:

−2; 3; 8; 13; ...................... .
(a) Determine the nth term and hence the 259th term.
(b) Which term of the number pattern is equal to 753

Example 4

6. Consider the following linear number pattern:

112 ; 2; 212 ; 3 ;.......................
(a) Determine the nth term and hence the 130th term.
(b) Which term of the number pattern is equal to 41?
Quadratic Sequence
 Consider the pattern 2; 5; 10; 17; 26; ……… we can
investigate some interesting properties of this
number pattern.

 If we get the differences between the terms, it is

clear that this number pattern does not have a
constant first difference as with linear number
patterns.

 However, it does have a constant second

difference.

 Number patterns with constant second

differences are called quadratic number patterns.

A quadratic sequence is a sequence of numbers in

which the second difference between any two
consecutive terms is constant.
The general term for a quadratic sequence is:
𝑇𝑛 = 𝑎𝑛2 + 𝑏𝑛 + 𝑐
Finding The General Term of a Quadratic Sequence
The general term for a quadratic sequence is:
𝑻𝒏 = 𝒂𝒏𝟐 + 𝒃𝒏 + 𝒄

Notice that :
 The constant second difference is given by the expression
𝟐𝒂 .
 The first term in the first difference row is given by 𝟑𝒂 + 𝒃
 The first term is given by 𝒂 + 𝒃 + 𝒄
So, consider the previous number pattern:
Example 5
Consider the following number pattern: 6; 17; 34; 57; …………………….
(a) Show that it is a quadratic number pattern.
(b) Write down the next two terms of the number pattern.
(c) Hence determine the nth term as well as the 100th term.
(d) Determine which term equals 162
Example 6
Consider the sequence 8; 18; 30; 44……
a) Write down the next two terms of the sequence
b) Calculate the nth term of the sequence
c) Which term of the sequence is 330?
Example 7

6 ; 15 ; 𝑥; 45 ; .......... is a quadratic number pattern (sequence).
