Computer Networks

Introduction to Computer Networks

A computer network is a collection of interconnected devices that can share data
and resources. Networks enable communication, information sharing, and remote
access across vast distances.

Types of Computer Networks

Local Area Network (LAN): Covers a small geographical area, like an office or
building.
Wide Area Network (WAN): Spans large areas, connecting multiple LANs across cities
or countries (e.g., the internet).
Metropolitan Area Network (MAN): Connects users in a city or large campus.
Personal Area Network (PAN): Connects devices around a single user, like Bluetooth
connections.
Network Topologies

Bus Topology: All devices are connected to a central cable.

Star Topology: All devices are connected to a central hub.
Mesh Topology: Each device is connected to multiple others, providing redundancy.
Ring Topology: Devices are arranged in a circular format, where data flows in one
direction.
Network Protocols
Protocols define rules for data transmission. Key protocols include TCP/IP for
internet communication, HTTP/HTTPS for web access, and FTP for file transfers.

Applications of Computer Networks

Networks enable communication through email, file sharing, resource sharing, and
cloud storage, supporting critical functions in business, education, healthcare,
and entertainment.
