Goal-setting is like creating a roadmap for where you want to go in life.

It gives you
direction and helps you stay focused on what’s important. I’ve had experiences where I set
goals and didn’t achieve them, and other times where I set goals and succeeded. Let me tell
you about those experiences.

One time, I set a goal to read more books. I even set alarms on my phone to remind me to read,
but I never stuck to it. Looking back, I think the reason I wasn’t successful was that I didn’t feel
the urgency or the need to read at that time. I was probably too distracted by other things going
on in my life, and reading just wasn’t a top priority for me at that moment.

On the other hand, I recently set a goal to save up enough money to buy a new motorbike. This
time, I was successful! The reason I think I achieved this goal was because I had a clear reason
why I wanted the motorbike. I’ve been struggling with transportation for a while now, and not
having my own means of transport made it hard for me to go out and do things. So, buying a
motorbike became really important to me because it would give me more freedom and
independence.

Effective goal-setting helps us achieve our goals because it gives us something to work towards
and keeps us motivated. When we set specific, achievable goals, it's easier to track our progress
and stay focused. Good goals have a few characteristics in common. First, they’re specific.
Instead of saying, “I want to save money,” a specific goal would be, “I want to save $500 by the
end of the month.” Second, good goals are measurable. You should be able to track your progress
and know when you’ve achieved your goal. Third, goals should be realistic. It’s great to aim
high, but setting goals that are too ambitious can be discouraging if they’re not achievable. And
finally, goals should have a timeframe. Setting a deadline helps create a sense of urgency and
keeps you accountable.

Based on my experiences and what I’ve learned about effective goal-setting, here are three goals
I’m going to set for myself:

Short-term goal: I want to start exercising three times a week for at least 30 minutes each
session. I’ll set a reminder on my phone and schedule it into my week to make sure I stick to it.
Mid-term goal: I want to improve my grades in my literature class by the end of the semester. I’ll
dedicate extra time each week to studying and seek help from my teacher or a tutor if I need it.

Long-term goal: I want to save up enough money to travel to a new country next summer. I’ll
create a budget and set aside a portion of my income each month to put towards my travel fund.
