WHAT IS SENSOR?

Sensors have become an integral part of our daily lives, transforming

the way we live, work, and interact with our environment. These tiny
devices have revolutionized numerous industries, from healthcare and
transportation to consumer electronics and smart homes. The impact of
sensors on modern society is profound, and their influence continues to
grow.
I was interested in this topic because sensors plays a vital role in our
daily life especially in today’s generation. Learning about them can
enhance understanding of how these technologies work and its significance
in the industry.
Sensors are figuratively the eyes and ears of a control system. It is
literally a device that “senses” something. In process control, sensors are
devices that detects changes in physical, electrical or chemical properties
and produces electrical output in response to that changes.
The physical properties that sensors are detecting are level,
temperature, flow, pressure, speed, position and many more. In process
control there are two classification of sensors namely the passive and
active sensors. An active sensor is one that requires an external power
source to be able to respond to environmental input and generate output.
For example, sensors used in weather satellites often require some source
of energy to provide meteorological data about the Earth's atmosphere.
A passive sensor, on the other hand, doesn't require an external power
source to detect environmental input. It relies on the environment itself for
its power, using sources such as light or thermal energy. Some examples
of Active sensors are piezoelectric sensor and thermocouple sensor while
passive sensor includes resistance temperature detector and strain gauge.
In Resistance Temperature Detector (RTD) it is a device that resistance will
change with a change in temperature and with this change there is also a
change in supply of voltage.

TYPES OF SENSORS
Sensors are devices that detect and measure physical, chemical, or
biological parameters in their environment, converting them into electrical
signals that can be read and interpreted by machines or humans. There are
numerous types of sensors, each designed to measure specific parameters
like temperature, level, flow and many more.
Sensors are a fascinating and rapidly evolving field and with its wide-
ranging implications for technology and society it interest me knowing these
types of sensors and its uses in every field.
There are two categories of sensors, these are digital and analog
sensor. Digital sensors are a vital component in the world of modern
technology and data acquisition. They play a pivotal role in capturing
various physical phenomena and converting them into digital signals that
can be processed, analyzed, and used for a multitude of applications. It
measures a physical quantity (such as temperature, pressure, light, or
humidity) and then quantizes that measurement into a digital form. As an
example, most digital sensors include a “sleep mode” feature that turns
the sensor off when it's not needed for system functions. Its example are
limit switch, proximity sensor, optical and push button. Analog sensor on
the other hand is a type of sensor that measures a physical quantity or
phenomenon and provides an output signal that is directly proportional to
the quantity being measured. In other words, analog sensors produce
continuous and analog output signals that represent the precise value of
the measured parameter without any discretization or digital conversion.
Analog sensors are valuable in scenarios where fine-grained, real-time
data is needed, and the inherent continuity of their output is essential. They
are commonly used in fields such as industrial automation, environmental
monitoring, and scientific research.

SENSOR CALIBRATION AND WHY IT IS IMPORTANT

The equipment used for measurements can lose their precision when
used at higher temperatures, high moisture or humidity conditions,
subjected to degradation, subjected to external shocks and others. This
can be observed as the error in the measurement. To tackle this error and
make necessary changes to the equipment calibration methods are used.
Today sensors are being used for making various measurements.Sensor
Calibration plays a crucial role in removing the errors in sensor
measurements.
I chose this topic because this is also crucial to sensors. We all know
that devices and machines can also have errors and its important for us to
know the methods or actions for these errors to be rectified or controlled.
Sensor calibration is the process of adjusting and fine-tuning a
sensor's output to ensure that it provides accurate and reliable data.
Calibration involves comparing the sensor's output with a known reference
point or standard, and making adjustments to the sensor's settings or
algorithms to minimize errors. Sensor calibration is crucial for several
reasons. It is for accurate measurement, error reduction, and preventive
maintenance.
