MID TERM EXAM (2024-25)
SUBJECT: PHYSICS (THEORY)
Time: 3 Hours M.M:70

(1) There are 33 questions in all. All questions are compulsory.


(2) This question paper has five sections: Section A, Section B, Section C, Section D and Section E.
(3) All the sections are compulsory.
(4) Section A contains sixteen questions in all; twelve MCQ and four Assertion Reasoning based questions
of 1 mark each,
Section B contains five questions of two marks each.
Section C contains seven questions of three marks each.
Section D contains two case study based questions (CBQ) of four marks each.
Section E contains three long answer questions of five marks each.
(5) There is no overall choice. However, an internal choice has been provided in one question in Section B,
one question in Section C, one question in each CBQ in Section D and in all three questions in Section E.
You have to attempt only one of the choices in such questions.
(6) Use of calculators is not allowed. You may use the following values of physical constants where ever

Q17. A series L-C-R circuit is made by taking R = 100 Ω, L= H, C = μF. This series combination is

connected across an AC source of 220 V, 50 Hz. Calculate the impedance of the circuit.
Q18. The equation for an alternating current is given by i = 77 sin 314t. Find the peak value, frequency,
and instantaneous value of current at t = 20 ms.
Q19. A bar magnet of magnetic moment 6 J/T is aligned at 60 with a uniform external magnetic field
of 0.44 T. Calculate the work done in turning the magnet to align its magnetic moment normal to the
magnetic field.
Q20 .The oscillating electric field of an electromagnetic wave is given by :
Ey = 30 sin [2 × 1011 t + 300 π x] Vm-1
(a) Obtain the value of the wavelength of the electromagnetic wave.
(b) Write down the expression for the oscillating magnetic field.
Q21.A long, straight cable in an industrial power plant carries a direct current of 100 A. Calculate the
strength of the resulting magnetic field at a perpendicular distance of 0.06 m from this cable.
Use: 4𝜋×10-7 T⋅m/A for the value of 𝜇0.

SECTION-C (3 MARKS EACH)

Q22. A 200 μF parallel plate capacitor having plate separation of 5 mm is charged by a 100 V dc source.
It remains connected to the source. Using an insulated handle, the distance between the plates is doubled
and a dielectric slab of thickness 5 mm and dielectric constant 10 is introduced between the plates.
Explain with reason, how the (i) capacitance, (ii) electric field between the plates, (iii) energy density of
the capacitor will change?

Q23. Two long straight parallel conductors are carrying steady current I 1 and I2 separated by a distance d.
If the currents are flowing in the same direction, show how the magnetic field set up in one produces an
attractive force on the other. Obtain the expression for this force. Hence define one ampere.

Explain principle and Working (not construction, just analytical treatment of working) of Moving coil
galvanometer and define current sensitivity for galvanometer.
Q24 .Two co-axial circular loop L1 and L2 of radii 3cm and 4cm are placed as shown. What should be the
magnitude and direction of the current in the loop L2 so that the net magnetic field at the point O be zero?

Q25. A metallic rod of 1m length is rotated with a frequency of 50 revolution per second, with one end
hinged at the centre and the other end at the circumference of a circular metallic ring of radius 1 m about
an axis passing through the centre and perpendicular to the plane of the ring. A constant uniform magnetic
field of 1 T parallel to the axis is present everywhere. What is the emf between the centre and the metallic
ring? What concept have you used here. Name the concept and define it.
Q26. A series LCR circuit with R=40Ω, L=30H and C=25𝜇𝐹 is connected to a 200 V AC supply.

Q29 Read the following passage and answer the subsequent sub-questions:
Self-Induction. When a current I flows through a coil, a flux gets linked with it. Any change in current
and hence magnetic flux sets up an induced emf in the coil. Self-inductance of a coil is the induced emf
set up in it when the current passing through it changes at the unit rate. It is a measure of the opposition to
the growth or the decay of current flowing through the coil. Also, value of self-inductance depends on the
number of turns in the solenoid, its area of cross-section and the permeability of its core material.

Q32 (a) Obtain the equivalent capacitance of the network shown in figure. For a 300 V supply,
determine the charge on each capacitor. [3]

(b)Explain Principle and working of Transformer along with relation between Voltage and number of
turns. [2]

(a)A dielectric slab of thickness 't’ is kept between the plates of a parallel plate capacitor with plate
separation 'd' (t <d). Derive the expression for the capacitance of the capacitor. [3]
(b) Draw graphs showing the variations of inductive reactance and capacitive reactance with frequency of
applied ac source. [1]
(c) Draw the phasor diagram for a series LRC circuit connected to an AC source. [1]

Q33 (i) Define electric dipole moment. Is it a scalar or a vector? Derive the expression for the electric
field of a dipole at a point on the equatorial plane of the dipole. [2.5]
(ii) A capacitor of unknown capacitance, a resistor of 100  and an inductor of self inductance L = (4/2 )
henry are connected in series to an ac source of 200 V and 50 Hz. Calculate the value of the capacitance
and the current that flows in the circuit when the current is in phase with the voltage. [2.5]
