addend addend sum/ total

Rules of Addition : ( Read Only )

Step 1 : Write the addends in the place value chart in their correct places one below the other.
( vertical addition)

Step 2 : Write the symbol for addition.

Step 3 : Add ones column.

Step 4 : Add tens column.

Step 5: Add hundreds column.

Step 6 : Add thousands column.

Properties of Addition or Addition Facts : ( Read Only )

1. Order Property : Numbers added in any order gives same answer.

Ex : 3 + 4 = 4 + 3
7 = 7

2. Grouping Property :
Ex : (2 + 1) + 6 = 2 + (1 + 6)
3+6 = 2+7
9 =9

3. Zero Property : When we add zero to a number, the answer is number itself.
Ex : 65 + 0 = 65

I. Add the given numbers mentally.

a. 7 + 5 = ___ b. 14 + 70 = ___ c. 30 + 30 = ___

II. Add the numbers given below without regrouping.

a. 321 + 458 b. 7234 + 2652

H T O TH H T O
3 2 1 7 2 3 4
+4 5 8 +2 6 5 2
7 7 9 9 8 8 6

III. Add the numbers given below with regrouping.

No of green marbles with Ajoy = 264 2 6 4
No of blue marbles with Ajoy = 321 + 3 2 1
Total number of marbles with Ajoy = 723 7 2 3

Estimating the sum of two numbers:

To estimate the sum of two numbers, we round off the numbers to their estimated value and
then add.

Steps:
1. Round off the numbers given to add, to nearest tens or hundreds.
2. Add the rounded off numbers.

I. Estimate the sum to nearest 10.

a. 15 + 8

TO TO
15 20
+ 8 + 10
23 30

The estimated sum of 15 and 8 is 30

b. 38 + 22

TO TO
38 40
+22 + 20
60 60

The estimated sum of 38 and 22 is 60

I. Estimate the sum to nearest 100.

a. 765 + 112

HTO HTO
76 5 8 00
+11 2 +1 0 0
8 77 9 00

The estimated sum of 765 and 112 is 900

b. 159 + 130

HTO HTO
15 9 2 00
+13 0 +1 0 0
2 8 9 3 00

The estimated sum of 159 and 130 is 300
