EXERCISE-1.1

AIM: Loading existing reports

A virtual machine running Power BI is provided. It may take a few minutes to load, but it only needs to
be set up once. Before loading data and creating visualizations, it's important to know how to load
existing reports.

EXECUTION:

1. Instruction:
Everything is prepared for you right here on DataCamp, but if you prefer to take the course on
your local version of Power BI, you can download the course material here or on the course
overview page.
Hint: There are two options to take the course as explained.

2. Instruction:
● Close the EmptyReport file.
● On the desktop, click on the Exercises folder andopen
the report called 1_0_loading. Pbix.
● Once the report opens, make sure you are viewing the Sales Data page.

Hint:
● You have been given access to Power Bl in a virtual machine with everything youneed
pre-installed. It's best to close previous workbooks to optimize performance.
● Once in the desktop of the virtual machine, there will be a folder on the left called
Exercises.
● When you have clicked on the folder, you will see a list of Power Bl desktop files, which
end with pbix.
● Open the 1_0_loading.pbix file.
● If the report named 1_0_loading.pbix doesn't show up, you might be trying to open a data
file. Make sure to use the Exercises folder from the virtual machine desktop.

3. Instruction:
You can enlarge the Power Bl interface by clicking on the full-screen button in thebottom
right corner or by zooming out.
Hint: No need to do this if your screen is big enough.

4. Instruction:

CSPIT-IT Page 1

You can also make the canvas area bigger by expanding and collapsing the Filters,
Visualizations, and Fields panes by selecting the arrows at the tops of the panes.
Hint: No need to do this if your screen is big enough.

5. Question:
What was the total profit for World Wide Importers? (Answer Format: X.XXM)
Hint:
● Close any files that appear on the virtual machine. Then, on the desktop, click onthe
Exercises folder and open the report called 1_0_loading. Pix.
● Make sure that you are viewing the information on the Sales Data page.
● The total profit is visible in the card visualization.
Ans: 9.92M

EXERCISE-1.2

AIM: Your first visualization

In this exercise, FactSale.cs is loaded, and a bar chart shows the quantity of items sold by Wide World
Importers (WWI). To make this more meaningful, segment the graph by years. Load another data file
with that information. Use the undo button in the top left corner to undo any edits. If progress is lost,
close any open reports and load 1_1_first_viz.pbixfrom the Exercises folder on the desktop.

EXECUTION:

1. Instruction:

Data to Page 1.
● You can delete the Sales Data page as you will no longer be using it.
Hint:
● In the bottom left corner, click on the Page 1 tab to change the page.
● You can delete the Sales Data page by hovering over the name and clicking the x.You
can also right-clock the name and select Delete page.

2. Instruction:
Using the Get Data button, select Text/CSV from the list and load DimDate.cv from
Datasets/WWI . Make sure to use the file in the wwI folder.

Hint:
● To load data, you can use the Get Data > Text/CSV button on the top Home pane.If you
are only seeing DimEmployee.lsx, it means you selected Excel instead of Text/CSV.
● Make sure to use the correct dataset! You can find the DimDate.csv file in the
Datasets/WWI folder. If there are no files in that location, you may be trying toopen a
workbook instead of loading a data file.
● In the pop-up window showing a preview of the DimDate.csv data, you can clickon the
yellow Load button.

3. Instruction:
In the Model view, create a relationship between FactSale 's Invoice Date Key and
DimDate's Date.

Hint:
● There are three different views in Power Bl (Report, Data, and Mode). They are
represented by icons on the left hand pane. You can see their names by hovering over
them.

CSPIT-IT Page 3

● To create a relationship, drag Invoice date key from the FactSale table on top ofthe
Date field in the DimDate table.

4. Instruction:
● In the Report view, select the existing bar chart and then select Calendar Yearfrom
DimDate in the Data pane.
● Make sure to use Calendar Year instead of Calendar Year Label. You can expandthe
Data pane by dragging its left-hand border.

Hint: In the Visualizations pane, below the visualization icons, you might need to scrolldown to
see the Value field.

5. Instruction:
In the Visualizations pane, drag Calendar Year to X-axis rather than Y-axis.
Hint: Alternatively you can remove Calendar Year from Y-axis and drag it straight fromthe
Data pane on the right to X-axis.

6. Question:
Based on your resulting visualization, which statement is true?
Hint:
● A taller bar corresponds to a higher quantity.
● Do you have Quantity as the Y-axis and Calendar Year as the X-axis in the
clustered column chart?

Ans: Quantity of items sold per year has only increased from 2013 to 2015.

EXERCISE-4.3

AIM: Adding a filter.

Filtering is an important tool when you're creating Power Bl reports. You don't always want to look at all
of the data. Limiting the data used in visuals to only a selection that is relevant can help you answer more
detailed business questions.
In the report, you can see that the cards on the Sales Analysis page tab are labeled Actual, Forecast, and
Budget, but they all have the same values. You'll need to apply some filters to fix this.

EXECUTION:

1. Instruction:
Close any open reports and open the 4_3_adding_a_filter.pbix report from the Exercisesfolder
on the desktop.

Hint:
● To open reports, remember to click on Open in the File menu. If you click on Browse
reports on the top right, you can navigate to the Exercises folder on thedesktop and
open the correct file.
● Make sure to open a report, meaning a file that ends in pbix.

EXERCISE-4.4

AIM: Turning off interactions.

By default, visualizations on a report page can cross-filter other visualizations. Sometimes, it’s necessary
to disable this functionality to keep a chart static regardless of other selections in the report. Turn off
those interactions for the Actual, Forecast, and Budget cards so they don't change when other elements
are selected. You may need to temporarily move a visual to see the interaction circle with the line
through it. If progress is lost, close any open reports and load 4_4_turning_off_interactions.pbix from the
Exercises folder on the desktop.

EXECUTION:

1. Instruction:
Select the "Budget Product Sold" visual.

Hint: Click anywhere on the visual to select it.

2. Instruction:
Go into the interaction editing mode in the Format tab at the top of the screen.

Hint: You can enable the interaction editing mode by clicking on the icon labeled Edit
Interactions in the Format tab.

Turn off interactions with each of the three cards.

Hint:
● For each of the three cards, select the icon that shows a circle with the linethrough
it to turn off the interaction. It will turn black.
● Don't forget you need to select the relevant column chart first before starting toedit the
interactions for it.
● You might not see the circle with the line through if your cards are overlappingtoo
much. Feel free to move them if required.

4. Instruction:
Exit the interaction editing mode.

Hint: You can exit the interaction editing mode by clicking on the icon labeled Edit
Interactions in the Format tab again.
