Motion - I
1. A particle moves from x = 5m to x = – 3m. Find the displacement of the particle for this motion.
2. A particle moves 4m due east and then 3m due south. Determine the displacement and distance travelled
by the particle.
3. A particle is moving along a circle of radius 10m Determine the distance and magnitude of displacement
after
(a) 0.5 revolutions
(b) 2 revolutions
(c) 2.5 revolutions
4. A particle travels a distance of 100m in 5s. Find its average speed for 5s duration.
5. What is the distance travelled by particle in 150s if its average speed for given duration is 10 m/s.
6. A railway train takes 8 hour to cover distance of 400 km between two stations. What is the speed of the
train, assuming it to be uniform.
7. A gun is fired from a distance of 1.2 km from a hill. The echo of the sound is heard at the same place
after 7.1 seconds. Calculate the velocity of the sound.
8. A railway train 200m long moves with speed of 72 km/h. Calculate the time taken by the train to cross a
bridge of 0.8 km long.
9. In a journey of 100 km a car travels first 25 km with a constant velocity of 50 km/h then it covers next
50 km in 15 min and remaining 25 km it travels with a speed of 100 km/h. Determine the average speed
of the cars journey.
10. A motor car moving uniformly at a velocity of 12m/s covers the same distance in 10s as another car does
in 15s. What is the constant velocity of second car ?
11. You are on a morning walk with your dog for a 4km trip. You run at a constant velocity of 2.5 m/s while
your dog runs back and forth between you and the destination with 11.5 m/s until you reach the
destination. What is the total distance travelled by the dog.
12. A person being chased by a lion is running in a straight line towards his car at a constant speed of 4 m/s.
The car is at a distance of ‘d’ meters away from the person. The lion is 26m behind the person and running
at a constant speed of 6 m/s. The person reaches the car safely. What is the maximum possible value of d
?
13. On a 60 km track a train travels the first 30 km with a uniform speed of 30 km/hr. How fast must the train
travel the next 30 km so as to average 40 km/h for the entire trip.
14. A body covers one third of its journey with speed u, next one third with speed V and the last one third
with speed w. Calculate the average speed to the body during the entire journey.
15. A body starts from rest and acquires a velocity of 12 m/s in 5s. Calculate the acceleration and distance
travelled.
16. A tennis ball traveling at 20 m/s bounces off a brick wall and rebounds at 18 m/s. A high speed camera
records the event. If the ball is in contact with wall for 4 × 10–3 s what is the magnitude of average
acceleration of ball during this interval.
17. A jet plane starts from rest with an acceleration of 3 m/s2 and makes a run for 35 s before taking off. What
is the minimum length of the runway and what is the velocity of the jet at takeoff ?
18. An electron travelling with a speed of 5 × 103 m/s passes through an electric field with an acceleration of
1012 m/s2. How long will it take for the electron to double its speed. What will be the distance covered by
the electron in this time.
19. A racer car accelerates on a straight road from rest to a speed of 180 km/hr in 25s. Assuming uniform
acceleration of the car through out find the distance covered in this time.
20. A person travelling on a straight line moves with a uniform velocity V1 for a distance x and with a uniform
velocity V2 for the next equal distance. The average velocity V is given by :

22. On a foggy day two car drivers spot each other when they are just 75 m apart. The two cars are travelling
at 72 km/hr and 54 km/hr respectively. Both of them simultaneously apply brakes which retard the cars
at the rate of 4m/s2. Find whether there is collision or not.
23. A wheel of radius 1m rolls forward half a revolution on a horizontal ground. Find the magnitude of the
displacement of the point the wheel initially is in contact with ground.
24. A drunkard walking in a narrow lane takes 5 stapes forward and 3 step backward followed again by 5
step forward and 3 step backward and so on. Each step 1s 1m long and requires 1s. How long does the
drunkard takes to fall in a pit 13 m away from the start.
