“Go touch some grass” But where?

Karachi
Karachi, a city that never sleeps, has over time turned
into a concrete jungle. The alleys have become dry,
greenery has faded, and our city has started an
inevitable journey towards becoming a heat island.
Every summer, our city experiences the wet bulb
phenomenon, a rising heat index, and unbearable
temperatures. Devastating heatwaves can reach up to
50°C, exacerbated by the huge emissions of
greenhouse gases and the absence of a coherent
response plan. 80% of the city's land is devoid of
plantations. Over-construction has increased cement-
based structures, enhancing heat absorption and
release. Low-income residents and outdoor workers
are especially vulnerable, struggling without sufficient
shade or cooling facilities. The city is in dire need of
greenery, and a social movement led by the people of
Karachi to address this challenge was inevitable.
Have We Lost The Glory?
Karachi, a city known for its vibrant,
progressive, and thriving culture &
infrastructure has come to a
devastating collapse over the last few
decades. Rather than progressing, the
city has faced immense regression.
Karachi’s glory appears to be long lost,
and the future seems dooming. The
aesthetic appeal of the city has
collapsed due to the lack of greenery,
and Karachi finds itself no better
description than a concrete jungle with
30 million inhabitants.
KARACHI IS NO MORE THE SAME!
What is
QAAYIM?
Initiated by the youth of Karachi, QAAYIM is a social movement that aims to transform the
landscape of Karachi into a beautiful green city. We aim to ignite the inherent energy and
vibrancy of the city for collective good. By engaging all citizens, we look forward to rebuilding a
green, vibrant, and sustainable future of Karachi.

QAAYIM aligns with UN’s 5 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

SDG 13 (Climate Action) through carbon sequestration
SDG 15 (Life on Land) by restoring and expanding green spaces,
SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) by enhancing urban greenery,
SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-Being) by improving public health through green spaces
SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation) by supporting water cycle management.

Our Member Base
The movement initiated by students of IBA has
reached various universities and colleges, bringing
in both the alumni and student bodies from one of
the most progressive strata of our society.
Our member base has people from IBA, IVS, Habib
University, KGS, and Lyceum, which are among
the leading institutes of the city.

Currently, our member base stands at around

800 active members and we aim to disperse it
into area-wise communities once we launch our
drives, in an effort to carry them out more
efficiently.
Operational Strategy
Operational blueprint of QAAYIM consists of three phases:

Residential Outreach: Plantations across residential

areas of Karachi, engaging citizens of the city and
growing the community base of the movement.

Roadside Plantations: Plantations across the alleys and

roadsides of Karachi, aiming to re-establish green
spaces and revive the aesthetic appeal of the city.

Outskirts Plantations: Plantations across the outskirts

of Karachi resulting in a significant area of land being
converted into an easily breathable and green space.
Finance & Funding Strategy
Funding of QAAYIM is strategized to be on 3 fronts:
Internal Financing: Active members of the movement will
bootstrap funds for initial phases of the movement. This
funding will be relatively small but will be helpful in
launching the movement and gaining public trust.

Public Funding: The funds will be collected from the public

at a massive level based on trust. Mediums such as
Impact-Meter and Go Fund Me will be utilized to improve
productivity.

Private Sector & Corporate Funding: The series of steps

to obtain funding and resource sharing with the private
sector once the public trust is gained.
Why Do We Need You?

Karachi needs all of us to join hands! It is only through mobilizing the people, resources, and
ideas that we can revive the lost glory of this city. We need public, private, and government
partnership for collective good. All of us need to be on the same page.

If you’re also a Karachiite, then we share the same pain. We all own this city, in its good and its
bad phases. We have the power to put in the effort that will make it a better place for all of
us, and especially for the future generations who are yet to come.
It is the people who make up a city, and Karachi’s condition, be it good or bad, is a direct result
of our efforts. Let us join hands for this important cause!

TOGETHER WE CAN!
