Linear Algebra - Assignment Questions

CIA 3, Component 2

1. Find the basis and dimension of the subspace 𝑆 of the vector space 𝑉3 (𝑅) defined
by 𝑆 = {(𝑥, 𝑦, 𝑧): 𝑥 + 𝑦 + 𝑧 = 0}.

2. If 𝛼, 𝛽 and 𝛾 are linearly independent vectors in 𝑉(𝑅), then check if the vectors 𝛼 +
𝛽, 𝛼 − 𝛽, 𝛼 − 2𝛽 + 𝛾 are linearly independent.

3. Check if the set 𝑆 = {(1,1,2,4), (2, −1, −5,2), (1, −1, −4,0), (2,1,1,6)} of
vectors are linearly independent in 𝑅4 . Also, extract a linearly independent subset.
Also, find the dimension and a basis of the subspace spanned by them.

4. Find the basis and dimension of the subspace spanned by the following subset of
the vector space of all matrices of order 2.
1 −5 1 1 2 −4 1 −7
𝑆 = {[ ],[ ],[ ],[ ] }.
−4 2 −1 5 −5 7 −5 21

5. Find the linear transformation 𝑇: 𝑅2 → 𝑅3 such that 𝑇(−1,1, ) =

(−1,0,2) and 𝑇(2,1) = (1,2,1).

6. Let 𝑃3 (𝑥) denote the vector space of all real polynomials. Define a mapping
𝑇: 𝑃3 (𝑥) → 𝑃3 (𝑥) by 𝑇(𝑝(𝑥)) = 𝑝′(𝑥), where 𝑝′(𝑥) denotes the differential
coefficient of p(x). Find the matrix of the linear transformation T relative to a
basis 𝐵 = {1, 𝑥, 𝑥 2 , 𝑥 3 }.

7. Let a linear map 𝑇: 𝑃3 → 𝑃2 defined by 𝑇(𝑎0 + 𝑎1 𝑥 + 𝑎2 𝑥 2 + 𝑎3 𝑥 3 ) = 𝑎3 + (𝑎2 +

𝑎3 )𝑥 + (𝑎0 + 𝑎1 )𝑥 2 . Find the matrix of T relative to the basis 𝐵1 = {1, (𝑥 −
1), (𝑥 − 1)2 , (𝑥 − 1)3 }and 𝐵2 = {1, 𝑥, 𝑥 2 }.
