Instructions: 4 13

ˆ Write down your name, sign on the line to accept the honor 5 15
pledge. Your exam will not be graded without it.
6 15
ˆ Correct answers with insufficient work or missing details will
not receive full points; they may receive no points. Make sure 7 20
your solutions are completely justified and legible to receive
full credit. Total: 105
ˆ You are strictly forbidden to use your phone and other devices
with communication capabilities. Turn off or silence them and GOOD LUCK!
stow them away.

ˆ This is a closed-book exam so you may NOT use your books

and notes on this exam. Calculators are allowed ONLY for
simple arithmetic operations and function evaluations. Ap-
plying RREF() to reduce a matrix, using DET() to
find the determinant, or using x−1 to find the inverse
matrix are not allowed. All of the steps in your solu-
tion should be shown clearly.

ˆ You are NOT allowed to receive help from someone else or

an online resource or to help another student. Anyone found
guilty of cheating in this course will receive a course grade
of F, in addition to any penalty assigned by the Academic
Conduct Committee.

ˆ Write exact answers, i.e., 2, log 2, π, not 1.41, 0.30103, 3.14.

ˆ Check that your copy of the exam is complete. (7 pages, 7

questions, 105 points.) Do not write in the table to the right.

ˆ START at 1:20 pm, FINISH WRITING AT 2:27 pm.

equation with constant coefficients is f (t) = te−t + 2te2t sin 3t − t. Given that the complemen-
tary solution is yc (t) = e2t (c1 cos 3t + c2 sin 3t) + (c3 + c4 t + c5 t2 )e−t , find an appropriate form
of a particular solution yp (t) by the method of undetermined coefficients.

20 7. Suppose that the mass in a mass-spring system with m = 4 kg and k = 100 N/m is set into
motion with x(0) = −1 m and initial velocity x′ (0) = 5 m/s.
(a) Find the position x(t) of the mass at time t.
(b) Find the amplitude, the period of the motion, and the time lag.
(c) Find the first time when the mass passes through the equilibrium position and determine
its velocity at that time.
(d) Let F (t) = 10 sin 5t be an external forcing function applied to this mass-spring system.
Find the general form of a particular solution. Explain what happens to the amplitude
of the oscillations in this case.
