Review Innovations CE Review for November 2024 – Steel Connection 3

Situation 1. Situation 3.

A 76mm x 76mm x 6mm angular section shown is welded to Given: P = 360 kN a = 200 mm b = 500 mm
an 8-mm thick gusset plate. Steel is A36 with Fy = 248 MPa
and Fu = 400 MPa. The electrode used is E60 with Fu = 414
MPa. The length L1 is 65 mm, the length L2 is 125 mm and the
cross-sectional area of the angle is 926 mm2.

Allowable stresses according the NSCP:

Tension based on gross area, Ft = 0.60Fy

Tension based on net area, Ft = 0.50Fu
Shear on net area, Fv = 0.3Fu
On effective area of weld in shear, FV = 0.30 Fu

1. Determine the value of P based on tension in gross area.

2. Determine the value of P based on tension in net area using
a strength reduction coefficient of 85%.
6. Calculate the average vertical force per unit length
3. Determine the value of P based on block shear in gusset
(N/mm) of the weld assuming that distance “a” is zero.
plate along the weld.
7. Calculate the horizontal force per unit length (N/mm) of
4. Determine the value of P based on shear in the weld. Use
the weld due to the eccentric load P.
thickness of the weld is 6mm.
8. Calculate the resultant force per unit length (N/mm) of the
weld due to eccentric load P.
Situation 2.

The angle 150x100x10mm is connected to the gusset plate. Situation 4.

The size of weld is 8 mm and using
E-70 electrodes. The plate is connected to the column using 8 mm fillet welds.

Problem for practice
Situation 1.

The bracket carrying a load is 12mm thick and is

welded. Allowable weld shear stress = 145 MPa. Weld
thickness = 9.5 mm.

1. If P=180kN acts at the centroid of the weld group, calculate

the force per unit length (N/mm) on the weld.
2. Find the polar moment of inertia of the weld group.
3. What is the maximum eccentric load P (kN) on the weld
group in the figure, considering the shear of the welds.

Situation 2.

A concentrically loaded steel section is carrying a load

of 240 kN and welded to the plate using E-60
electrodes. Ag = 1600 mm2

4. Determine the length of the weld on each side of the flange.

Weld thickness is 9mm.
5. If the length of the weld on each side is 100mm. Determine
the thickness of weld.
6. Tensile stress base on gross area.
7. Tensile stress base on net area. U = 0.80
