MSM 131 Tutorial Sheet 2 October 25, 2022

1. Use long division and/or synthetic division to divide the first polynomial by
the second. Express your answer in the form f (x) = d(x)q(x) + r(X)
(a) 5x3 + 6x2 − 17x + 20, x + 3
(b) x2 + x3 − 2x − 5, x − 3
(c) 4x + 3x2 + x3 , x − 2
(d) x5 + 3x4 − 2x3 − 7x2 − x + 4, x2 + 1
(e) x5 − 1, x − 1
(f) 4x3 − 5x2 + 6x − 7, x − 2
(g) 6x4 − 2x3 − 3x2 − x, x − 5
(h) 8x3 − 4x2 + 6x − 3, x − 12
2. Use the method of completing the square to find the vertex form of the
quadratic function. State the vertex and axis of symmetry of the graph of
the function and sketch.
(a) f (x) = x2 + 4x + 1
(b) f (x) = −2x2 − 4x + 5
(c) f (x) = x2 + 6x − 1
3. Find the maximum or minimum value of the function. State whether this
value is a maximum or a minimum.
(a) f (x) = x2 + 8x
(b) f (x) = −x2 + 10x − 3
(c) f (x) = 5x2 − 11
4. Use synthetic division and the factor theorem to determine whether the
second polynomial is a factor of f (x).
(a) f (x) = x3 + 2x2 − 5x − 6, x − 2
(b) f (x) = x4 − 25x2 + 144, x − 3
(c) f (x) = x5 + 2x4 − 22x3 − 50x2 − 75x, x − 5
(d) f (x) = x4 + x3 − 21x2 − x + 20, (x + 5) or (x − 2)
5. Solve the equation x4 + x3 − 21x2 − x + 20 = 0
