ME 212- THERMODYNAMICS

PRACTICE QUESTIONS ON VAPOUR POWER CYCLES

Submit solutions to questions 1, 2 and 4 for grading as Homework.

Due next week Wednesday 13/04/22.

1. Consider a steam power plant operating on the simple ideal Rankine cycle. Steam enters
the turbine at 3 MPa and 350 ℃ and is condensed in the condenser at a pressure of 75 kPa.
Saturated liquid enters the pump. Sketch the process on a T-s diagram and determine the
a. thermal efficiency of this cycle
b. Work ratio
c. Specific steam consumption (SSC)

2. A steam power plant is proposed to operate between the pressures of 10 kPa and 2 MPa
with a maximum temperature of 400 ℃, as shown in T-s diagram in figure 1. What is the
maximum efficiency possible from the power cycle?

3. Consider a 210-MW steam power plant that operates on a simple ideal Rankine cycle.
Superheated steam enters the turbine at 10 MPa and 500 °C and is cooled in the condenser
at a pressure of 10 kPa. The isentropic efficiency for both the turbine and pump is 85
percent. Show the cycle on a T-s diagram with respect to saturation lines, and determine
a. the quality of the steam at the turbine exit,
b. the thermal efficiency of the cycle, and
c. the mass flow rate of the steam.

4. A Rankine cycle operates between pressures of 80 bar and 0.1 bar. The maximum cycle
temperature is 600°C. If the steam turbine and condensate pump efficiencies are 0.9 and
0.8 respectively, calculate the specific work and thermal efficiency. Relevant steam table
extract is given below.

5. A simple Rankine cycle uses water as the working fluid. The boiler operates at 6000 kPa
and the condenser at 50 kPa. At the entrance to the turbine, the temperature is 450℃. The
isentropic efficiency of the turbine is 94 percent, pressure and pump losses are negligible,
and the water leaving the condenser is subcooled by 6.3℃. The boiler is sized for a mass
flow rate of 20 kg/s. Determine
a. the rate at which heat is added in the boiler,
b. the power required to operate the pumps,
c. the net power produced by the cycle, and
d. the thermal efficiency.
6. A steam power plant operates on the cycle shown. If the isentropic efficiency of the turbine
is 87 percent and the isentropic efficiency of the pump is 85 percent, determine
a. the thermal efficiency of the cycle and
b. the net power output of the plant for a mass flow rate of 15 kg/s.
