Requirements
· Operating System: Windows 8/10

1
WINDOWS ACCESSORIES
Windows operating system ships with some handy applications known as Windows
accessories.

Calculator, Notepad, Paint, Explorer, WordPad are some of the most frequently used
accessories.

2
SYSTEM TOOLS
For a smooth performance of a system, periodic maintenance is necessary, for this we have
to use the system tools.

Tools like Disk Check, Disk defragement, etc., helps in system maintenance.

Disk Cleanup

Disk Cleanup frees disk space by cleaning areas that gather unneeded files.

From the Start menu, select Programs or All Programs, then Accessories, then System
Tools, and then Disk Cleanup.

Select the drive on which you would like to clear disk space (usually your C: drive), and click
OK.

Check the options to clean up

3
Disk Defragment

Disk Defragmenter consolidates files so that each is saved in contiguous physical space on
the hard drive.

To run Disk Defragmenter:

Choose Start menu | All Programs | Accessories | System Tools | Disk Defragmenter.

Select the drive you want to clean and click OK.

Click Analyze. This may take several minutes.

Click Close or Defragment. If the drive needs defragmented and you choose Defragment, this
may take several minutes to several hours, depending on the number of files to consolidate.

System Restore

System restore is a feature of Windows that allows you to roll back the system to the same
configuration it had at an earlier time.

To run System Restore:

Go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore.

The System Restore screen will com up.

Follow the on screen instructions

Format

There are times when Windows becomes so damaged or so compromised by hackers and
Trojan programs.

that the only thorough solution is to essentially start all over. This is accomplished by
formatting your hard drive, which means erasing all of the programs and the data on

your machine, and re-installing Windows.

The format creates a new root directory and file system for the disk. It can also check for bad
areas on the disk, and it can delete all data on the disk.

5
Control Panel

Control Panel is a part of the Microsoft Windows graphical user interface. It allows users to
view and manipulate basic system settings and controls .

You can use control panel for the tasks such as adding hardware, adding and removing
software, controlling user accounts, and changing accessibility options.

COMPUTER NETWORK
A network is a method that connects several devices in order to share resources
printers ,data, internet or allow data communications.

A popular example of a computer network is the Internet, which allows millions of users to
share information.

Every Computer Network Includes:

1. At least two computers that have something to share.

2. A cable or wireless pathway, called Transmission Media, signal each other.

3. Rules, called Protocols, so that computers can use the unified principle of data
communication.

4. Networking Interface Cards (NIC)

6
File Sharing: Networks offer a quick and easy way to share files directly.

Resource Sharing: All computers in the network can share resources such a printers, fax
machines, modems and scanners.

Communication: Those on the network can communicate with each other via e-mail,

instant messages etc.

Sharing of Information: Computer networks enable us to share data and information with
the computers that are located geographically large distance apart.

APPLICATIONS OF INTERNET
· E-mail
· Searchable Data (Web Sites)
· E-Commerce
· News Groups
· Internet Telephony (VoIP)
· Video Conferencing
· Chat Groups
· Instant Messengers
· Internet Radio

NETWORK CLASSIFICATION
Depending upon area covered by a network:

LOCAL AREA NETWORK (LAN): A LAN is a network that is used for communicating
among computer devices, usually within an office building or home.

METROPOLITAN AREA NETWORK (MAN): A metropolitan area network (MAN) is a large

computer network that usually spans (covers) a

city or a large campus.

WIDE AREA NETWORK (WAN): WAN covers a large geographic area such as country,
continent or even whole of the world. (Internet)

7
NETWORK TOPOLOGY
Network topology describe the physical and logical arrangement of the network nodes
(devices).

Mesh, Star, Bus, Ring, Tree, Hybrid

MAJOR COMPONENTS OF COMPUTER

8
LAB TASKS
1. What is Network Interface Card?
2. Differentiate between Internet & Intranet.
3. Elaborate different types of Network Topologies.
4. What is the purpose of Control Bus, Data Bus & Address Bus.
5. What is the purpose of cache memory? Whether it is primary memory or
secondary memory, permanent memory or not.
