Course Contents This is an IPD programme core course.

This course introduces advanced engineering techniques that can help you design better products. It addresses
fundamental engineering principles and focuses on their practical application to the design and optimisation of
products that are effective, efficient and sustainable. Students will learn how to use advanced software tools for
modelling and simulation of important physical phenomena (solid mechanics, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics). They
will also gain proficiency in writing custom Python code for analysis, simulation and data processing. Throughout the
course, students will be taught to recognise the limitations of these techniques, apply them appropriately and critically
evaluate their outputs.
Study Goals Upon finishing this course, students are able to:
1. Explain the underlying principles and associated limitations of advanced engineering techniques, and contrast
different techniques.
2. Apply advanced engineering techniques to a product or product component.
3. Analyse the results of advanced engineering techniques in order to evaluate the effectiveness, efficiency and
sustainability of a design.
4. Evaluate the validity insights obtained from advanced engineering techniques.
Education Method Each week will consist of: A (two period) lecture to cover the relevant knowledge; a (two period) workshop to practise
the practical application of the techniques; guided self-study (supported by a reading list and some pre-recorded
video content) to supplement the lectures and workshops.
Assessment The study goals of this course will be assessed by:
- Group Assignment, report based on practical work (40%)
- Individual Exam (60%)

Enrolment / Application For IDE MSc (elective) courses registration via the MyTUDelft app is compulsory during the registration period in
