MICRO PROJECT REPORT

Aim:- Explore how image resolution impacts print quality and

the factors affecting it (dpi, ppi, lpi).

Course outcomes:- Co4:-Identify the colour model and

gamut.Co5:-Measure the attributes of colour.

Literature review / Methodology Followed:-

1. DPI (Dots Per Inch): -

o Refers to the number of dots of ink a

printer can place in one inch.
o Higher DPI generally means better print
quality, as it allows for more detail and
smoother gradients.
o For example, a printer with a DPI of 600 can produce more detailed images
than one with 300 DPI.

2. PPI (Pixels Per Inch):-

o Refers to the number of pixels in one inch of an image
on a screen.
o It's crucial for digital images; higher PPI means more
detail and sharper images when viewed.
o Common PPI values for print images are 300 PPI for
high-quality prints and 150 PPI for lower-quality
prints

3. LPI (Lines Per Inch):

o Used mainly in the context of halftone printing
(like magazines).
o It measures the number of lines of dots in one
inch, affecting how images blend and how
textures appear.
o Typically, higher LPI can lead to smoother
images but requires higher resolution images to
avoid moiré patterns.

Impact of Image Resolution on Print Quality

1. Image Size and Resolution:

o An image with a higher PPI is crucial for larger prints. For instance, an image
meant for a poster (24x36 inches) needs to have a high enough resolution to
ensure clarity when printed.
o A 300 PPI image will need to be significantly larger in file size compared to a
150 PPI image for the same physical dimensions.

2. Viewing Distance:
o The intended viewing distance can influence resolution needs. Images viewed
up close (like photographs) require higher PPI than those viewed from a
distance (like billboards).
o For example, a billboard can be printed at 30 PPI because it’s viewed from far
away, while a magazine ad might need 300 PPI for sharp detail.

3. Print Medium:
o Different printing technologies and mediums (like inkjet, laser, offset) may
have varying DPI requirements. For instance, inkjet printers typically perform
well at higher DPI settings.
o The type of paper also affects print quality; glossy finishes can enhance the
appearance of high-resolution images, while matte finishes may require
adjustments in contrast and colour.

4. Colour Depth:
o The colour depth of an image (measured in bits per pixel) can affect print
quality. Images with higher colour depth have more colour variations, which
can enhance the visual quality when printed.

Conclusion:-
Understanding the relationship between image resolution, DPI, PPI, and LPI is crucial for
achieving optimal print quality. As a rule of thumb, aim for higher resolutions for detailed
images and consider the print medium and viewing distance when deciding on the necessary
DPI and PPI. Balancing these factors can lead to stunning print results that accurately
represent the original image.
