Bonnie and David are talking about films. Listen carefully and choose the best answers for
Questions 1–5. You have 30 seconds to study the questions. You may start now. (30-
second pause) Listening carefully. The conversation will be played once only. The
conversation will begin now.
Bonnie : Hi, David! I saw you walking out of the cinema yesterday. Did you see a
film?
David : Yes, Bonnie. I watched Cooking for an Alien with Eddie, my brother.
Bonnie : Cooking for an Alien? Isn’t that a book? I remember reading it during the
summer holidays.
David : Yes, they turned the story from the book into a film. I haven’t read the
book but Eddie loved it. He didn’t really like the film version, though. He
thought it was too different from the book.
Bonnie : How was it different? In the book, an alien visits Earth and asks a chef to
cook something which tastes like the food from his home planet.
David : The film is still about that. But Eddie said they made the alien too kind in
the film. He said the alien was a lot fiercer in the book. I enjoyed the film,
though. I laughed a lot!
Bonnie : Maybe I’ll give the film version a chance, too, then. As long as it’s as
funny as the book, I don’t mind having a kinder alien.
David Do you read a lot?
Bonnie Yes, I do. Actually, I just finished one called Back into the Sea. It’s about a
swimmer who becomes very afraid of the water after she has an accident
during a boat trip. With the help of her friends, she is able to swim again.
I’d like to see a film version of this book, too.
David : It sounds like it would be a very touching film.
Bonnie : Yes. But more importantly, if they make it into a film, I hope they pick
Victoria Lam to play the swimmer.
David : The winner of the Best Actress Award at last year’s Golden Film Festival?
Why? Is she a good swimmer?
Bonnie : I don’t know, but I’ve seen all of her films and she’s just so beautiful! If
they got her to star in Back into the Sea, I’d watch it many, many times!

Bonnie is listening to a radio programme. You now have 45 seconds to study the questions
below. (45-second music) Now listen to the programme. The programme will be played
two times. When you hear a beep (beep), answer the question. The programme will begin
now.
[ Raymond : Hello, this is Raymond Tang. Thank you for listening to ‘Teens’ Best’. Our
guest today is Monica Wong, the winner of the Five-minute Filmmaking
Competition. Congratulations, Monica.
Monica : Thank you. Actually, I worked with my partner and best friend, Lucy, for
this competition. She wanted to come today but couldn’t because she’s
sick.
Narrator : Question 1: What is the name of the radio programme? (beep) (8-second
pause)
Question 2: Which of the following is true about Lucy? (beep) (8-second
pause)
Raymond : So, Monica, could you talk about how you and Lucy made your five-
minute film? Everyone had to shoot their films on a mobile phone, right?
Monica : Yes. We could edit our footage on a computer, but that was all. We
couldn’t use a professional camera or anything like that.

Raymond : Was it very difficult to shoot with a mobile phone? They are so small.
Monica : Actually, no. Lucy and I are quite familiar with using mobile phones. On
the other hand, if the competition asked us to shoot with a professional
camera, we wouldn’t have known what to do at all!
Raymond : Ha ha, you young people are so good at using mobile phones. / I sound
like an old grandpa … /
Narrator : Question 3: In the filmmaking competition, Lucy and Monica _____ .
(beep) (8-second pause)
Question 4: Monica thinks _____ . (beep) (8-second pause)
Listen to what Raymond says and answer Question 5.
(Repeat / /)
Question 5: What does Raymond mean? (beep) (8-second pause)
Monica : Actually, not all technologies are easy for us to use. For example, we
weren’t very good at editing our video. Originally, we wanted to make an
action film with the two of us playing police officers. We also wanted to
add special effects, like playing a running scene very slowly. But we just
couldn’t make it work. In the end, we gave up the action film idea and
made the film we have now.
Raymond : Well, your final film, Party Animals, is very good. I’m glad!
Narrator : Question 6: Lucy and Monica were NOT good at _____ . (beep) (8-
second pause)
Question 7: Why is Raymond glad? (beep) (8-second pause)
Monica : Thanks! We had fun shooting Party Animals. On the first day, we had to
get Lucy’s pet dog to look up at a large Christmas bell, but the dog was
more interested in eating! Shooting the scene wasn’t easy but it was still
an enjoyable experience.
Raymond : That is great! And we’ve had fun watching your film. Thank you for
sharing your experience with us today, Monica.
Monica : You’re welcome. ]
Narrator : Question 8: What scene did Lucy and Monica want to shoot on the first
day? (beep) (8-second pause)
Question 9: Raymond says, ‘That is great!’ What does ‘That’ mean?
(beep) (8-second pause)
Listen to the radio programme again and check your answers.
(Repeat [ ] without questions and pauses.)

Part I
(pupils’ own answers) e.g.
One day, Miss Fong asked Annie, ‘What do you want to be when you grow up?’
Annie said, ‘I want to be a social worker when I grow up.’
At recess, Annie’s classmate Janet was crying in the playground. Annie asked,
‘What’s wrong?’ Janet showed Annie her Maths test paper. Annie said, ‘Ha! You failed your
Maths test. That test was so easy!’ Janet was unhappy and walked away.
Miss Fong spoke to Annie. She said, ‘Annie, social workers need to be
understanding. They have to listen to others’ problems and understand their feelings.
Please don’t laugh at others again.’
That night Annie said sorry to Janet. From that day on, she became more caring
and understanding.
