Installing Quartus Prime Lite

Nicole Hamilton

Altera’s free Quartus Prime Lite software can be downloaded here. You will want the latest
16.1 version, the same as installed on our Beardslee lab machines. To run well, it requires
a Windows machine with at least 16 GB and preferably, a Core i7. (Sadly, our Beardslee
have only Core i5s.)

You will need Quartus Prime Lite Edition, which includes the ModelSim simulator, plus
Cyclone V device support. To download, you will need to create a free myAltera account.
Expect the download will take about an hour and the install will take another hour. I
recommend installing it into the c:\altera\16.1 directory. (Other versions can be installed
side-by-side on the same machine and can exchange files.)

You will also want the DE1-SoC CD-ROM (rev.F Board) version 5.1.1, which contains the
SystemBuilder.exe utility. You can download as a .zip file here. I recommend creating a
NEW directory, “C:\altera\DE1-SoC v.5.1.1 RevF System CD”, then unzipping the CD-
ROM zip into that new directory.
