Autumn Break HW - Xi
1. The volume of a liquid flowing out per second of a pipe of length l and radius r is written by a
student as V=πPr4/8ηl
where P is the pressure difference between the two ends of the pipe and η is coefficient of
viscosity of the liquid having dimensional formula ML–1 T–1.
Check whether the equation is dimensionally correct.
2. A motor car moving at a speed of 72km/h cannot come to a stop in less than 3.0 s while for a
truck this time interval is 5.0 s. On a highway the car is behind the truck both moving at
72km/h. The truck gives a signal that it is going to stop at emergency. At what distance the car
should be from the truck so that it does not bump onto (collide with) the truck. Human
response time is 0.5s.
3. The velocity-displacement graph of a particle is shown
in Figure
(a) Write the relation between v and x.
(b) Obtain the relation between acceleration and displacement and plot it
4. A girl riding a bicycle with a speed of 5 m/s towards north direction,
observes rain falling vertically down. If she increases her speed to 10 m/s, rain appears to
meet her at 45° to the vertical. What is the speed of the rain? In what direction does rain fall
as observed by a ground-based observer?
5. A hill is 500 m high. Supplies are to be sent across the hill using a canon that can hurl packets at
a speed of 125 m/s over the hill. The canon is located at a distance of 800m from the foot of hill
and can be moved on the ground at a speed of 2 m/s; so that its distance from the hill can be
adjusted. What is the shortest time in which a packet can reach on the ground across the hill ?
Take g =10 m/s 2.
6. When a body slides down from rest along a smooth inclined plane making an angle of 45°
with the horizontal, it takes time T. When the same body slides down from rest along a rough
inclined plane making the same angle and through the same distance, it is seen to take time pT,
where p is some number greater than 1. Calculate the co-efficient of friction between the body
and the rough plane.
7. A person in an elevator accelerating upwards with an acceleration of 2 m s –2, tosses a coin
vertically upwards with a speed of 20 ms-1. After how much time will the coin fall back into his
hand? ( g = 10 m s–2)
8.The vector sum of a system of non-collinear forces acting on a rigid body is given to be non-
zero. If the vector sum of all the torques due to the system of forces about a certain point is
found to be zero, does this mean that it is necessarily zero about any arbitrary point?
