Exam 1 Review

Math 148

The following is a list of suggested problems to practice for the exam. If any of these give you
difficulties, I suggest that you find similar problems and work out several of them until you feel
confident about your ability to solve that particular type of problem.

Problems:
(1) Let f (x) = x3 + 3 sin x + 2 cos x. Compute (f −1 )0 (2).

(2) Compute the derivative.

2 √
(a) y = ln(e−x ) (b) y = e2x + e−2x (c) y = [ln(x)]arctan x

(d) y = ln | sec 5x + tan 5x| (e) y = x tan−1 (4x) e1/x

(f) y =

(g) y = 3x ln x (h) y = ln sin x − 21 sin2 x (i) y = ln(cosh 3x)
R 2x 2
(j) f (x) = ln x e−t dt

(3) Find the equation of the tangent line to the curve y = ex that passes through the origin.
(4) Evaluate the given integral.

(6) Under ideal conditions the rate of change of the air pressure, with respect to the height
above sea level, is proportional to the pressure at the given height. The air pressure is 30
inches at sea level and 15 inches at 18,000 feet. Find the altitude above sea level at which
the pressure will be 7 inches.
