Exercise 1. (10pts) Let f be a function defined on the open interval (−2, 2) by f (x) = x.
Compute the Fourier coefficients, and the Fourier series of f on the fundamental interval
(−2, 2).
Exercise 2. (10pts) Let f , g be functions defined on the open interval (−π, π). Let h be
defined on the open interval (−π, π) by h(x) = 3f (x) − g(x). Let f˜, g̃ and h̃ be the Fourier
series of f , g and h respectively. Express h̃ in terms of f˜ and g̃ (justify your answer in terms
of Fourier coefficients).
Exercise 3. (15pts) For each of these functions, indicate if it is piecewise continuous on the
interval (−1, 1). If it is not piecewise continuous, explain why not.
√
a) f (x) = x if x > 0 and f (x) = 1 if x ≤ 0.
1
b) f (x) = |x| .
| cos(1/x)|
c) f (x) = cos(1/x) .
Exercise 4. (15pts) Prove that for any positive integer N , one has
N
X
sin(N x + x/2) = sin(x/2) + 2 cos(n x) sin(x/2).
n=1
Hint: you can try to use the identity sin(a + b) = sin(a − b) + 2 cos(a) sin(b) several times.
sin(x)
Exercise 5. (25pts) Let f be the function defined by f (x) = for all x ̸= 0 in (−π, π).
|x|
a) Find the value of f (0−) and f (0+).
b) Is the function f piecewise continuous on (−π, π)?
c) Do the one-sided derivative f+′ (π/2) and f−′ (π/2) exist?
d) Can we conclude from the theorems seen in class that f˜(π/2) = 2/π?
e) What is the value of f ′ (0+), and the value of f+′ (0)?
Hint: For computing the one-sided limits, you may want to use l’Hôpital’s rule. L’Hôpital’s
rule is a theorem that saying that if g, h are functions such that g(x0 ) = 0 and h(x0 ) = 0 (and
g(x) g ′ (x0 )
the derivatives g ′ (x0 ), h′ (x0 ) exist) then lim = ′ .
x→x0 h(x) h (x0 )

Exercise 6. (25pts) Let f be the function defined on (−1, 1) by f (x) = |x|.
a) Is f piecewise continuous on (−1, 1)?
b) Is f piecewise smooth on (−1, 1)?
c) Do the one-sided derivatives f+′ (1/2) and f−′ (1/2) exist, and are they finite?
d) Let f˜ be the Fourier series of f . What is the value of f˜(1/2)? (You don’t need to
compute Fourier coefficients to answer this question!)
e) Let f˜ be the Fourier series of f . What is the value of f˜(5/2)?
