Technology Reflection Journal & Final Paper

40 points (8%)
Throughout the Semester
Throughout the semester, you engaged in Blackboard discussion, class activities, and wrote papers about
your use of, engagement with, and critical thinking about new media technologies. These assignments
throughout the semester position you better to write your final paper at the end. You may utilize instances
from your several of your discussion board posts for this final paper.
Note: There is no “right” or “wrong” way to do this part of the assignment. The journal is to facilitate
your final paper, which has specific guidelines (see below).
Some tips:
● Every time you complete a course assignment, make note of the concepts that resonated with you
(ie, that you understood, liked, or that reminded you of something outside of the course)
● As you utilize technology this semester, if something reminds you of something we have said in
class, write it down
● Keep the questions for the final paper assignment (see below) in your mind as you complete
course assignments
● As you write your journal, use your own thoughts, feelings, and impressions about technology to
guide what you choose to write about
Some general questions to spark your thinking:
● What about a particular technology (eg, Facebook, cellphones, an app) seems “weird” to you?
● What about a particular technology seems particularly useful?
● What aspects of technology do you feel you can’t live without?
● What aspects of technology do you wish would go away and never return?
The overall goal:
The journal, overall, will help you engage deeply with course material and connect it to real-world
applications throughout the semester, as it prepares you to write your final paper at the end.

End of Semester Paper

Due at end of final exam period on Blackboard
For this final assignment, create/write a formal, structured essay that incorporates the following
requirements. You are encouraged to use ideas, sentences, examples, and other excerpts from your
blackboard posts and personal class notes to assist you in this process. That is, feel free to copy and paste
bits and pieces of your blackboard posts into your paper to get you started, but DO NOT turn it in without
significantly re-organizing, editing, and incorporating the requirements below.
Requirements:
At the end of the semester, you should turn in an edited, “clean” version of your semester-long journal as
an APA paper that includes the following:
● At least 10 course concepts, highlighted in bold and used accurately (demonstrating mastery of
their use and importance)
● At least 10 citations from course readings this semester, showing how the authors we’ve read
connect with what you’ve learned or challenged your thinking in some way (cite properly in APA
format and include a References page at the end)
● At least 10 specific examples from your CTA and MMR assignments to back up your answers
(feel free to include screenshots, links, or other documentation for support)
● Answers 1-2 of the questions below:
a. Has your outlook on technology changed this semester? Why or why not? How have your
beliefs been changed/reinforced?
b. Will you change anything about your technology use because of this course? Why or why
not? If so, what will you change?
c. What are you still wrestling with/unsure of, now that the course is over? (eg, what is still
challenging your thinking, or what do you disagree with?)
d. How has your digital literacy and/or use of multiple modes increased this semester (if at
all)? Why or why not?
e. Another relevant topic of your choosing (check with me if you wish!)
Length and format of paper
Turn in a paper of 2,000--3,000 words (approximately 4-6 pages), including any images or links(that must
be included in the reference section). The thoroughness of your paper and your ability to answer the
questions is more important than the length. However, you must use proper spelling, grammar, and APA
format, including citations.
Organizing your paper
You can organize the paper in any way you wish, but be sure to structure it in a way that is clear, easy to
read, and engaging. However you organize it, make sure the paper includes an introduction, thesis,
conclusion, and transitions throughout so I know where you’re going at all times. Incorporate your
citations, course concepts, and examples throughout the paper--do not just write them chronologically!
Style of writing
Feel free to use informal language if you wish, but make sure to incorporate concepts, examples, and
citations accurately and cited appropriately (ie, you can use “I” or slang terms if you want, but do NOT
neglect good writing in the process. You can have both at the same time). Since it’s based on your journal
throughout the semester, you can have fun with this paper, but please make sure it is still a well-written,
neat essay that demonstrates your abilities. Grammar, spelling, and APA are important!

The grading rubric on the next page shows how you will be graded on the final paper.
