1. What is computer maintenance ?


Ans. Computer maintenance refers to the actions carried out so as to keep a computer
in a good state of working. A computer not maintained properly may run slow or prevent
some programs from running or may not run at all.

2. What is the significance of computer maintenance ?


Ans. Computer maintenance is necessary for the following reasons:
1. Computer maintenance detects issues early, before they become problems.
2. Computer maintenance prevents against viruses and malware.
3. Computer maintenance speeds up your Computer.
4. Computer maintenance keeps operating system and other important software like
Antivirus Software up-to-date.
5. Computer maintenance maximizes Software Efficiency.

3. What tasks are performed in computer maintenance ?


Ans. Computer maintenance includes :
(i)physical cleaning so as to remove dust and debris as these heat up a computer
(ii) internal cleaning so as to keep computer applications and program keep virus free
(iii) keeping backup and updated software and programs.

4. What are the guidelines for physical cleaning of a computer ?


Ans. General guidelines for cleaning are :
 Never spray or squirt any liquid onto any computer component. If a spray is
needed, spray the liquid onto a cloth.
 When cleaning a component of the computer, turn it off before cleaning.
 When cleaning, be careful to not accidentally adjust any knobs or controls.
 Never eat or drink around the computer.

5. What are common tools for physical cleaning of a computer?


Ans. Commonly used cleaning tools for physical components of computer are:

 Cotton Cloth. Only use a lint-free cloth when cleaning components such as the
case, a drive, mouse, and keyboard. Don't use a cloth to clean any circuitry such
as the RAM or motherboard.
 Water or rubbing alcohol. When moistening a cloth, it is best to use water or
rubbing alcohol.
 Portable Vacuum. Used for sucking the dust, dirt, hair, cigarette particles, and
other particles out of a computer. However, do not use a vacuum that plugs into
the wall since it creates lots of static electricity that damages your computer.
6. Why is it necessary to use a non-static generating vacuum cleaner ?
Ans. It is important to select a vacuum cleaner for use with computer equipment that
will not generate harmful static because Electrostatic discharge harms sensitive
computer components.

7. What is computer virus?


Ans. A computer virus is a malicious program that self-replicates by copying itself to
another program. A computer virus spreads by itself into other executable code or
documents. The purpose of a computer virus is to infect vulnerable systems, gain admin
control and steal user sensitive data.

8. Briefly explain these terms :


(i) Worms. A worm is a self-replicating program which eats up the entire disk space or
memory. A worm keeps on creating its copies until all the disk space or memory is filled.

(ii) Trojan Horses. A Trojan horse is a program that appears harmless (such as a text
editor or a utility program) but actually performs malicious functions such as deleting or
damaging files.

9. Briefly explain these terms :


(i) Junk files. Junk files is a general name for temporary files, old program setup files,
cached thumbnails, and other bits of digital detritus that pile up over time.

(ii) Temporary files. Files created by applications and programs for internal usage while
working. These are of no use once an application program is closed.

(iii) Spam files. Electronic junk mail or junk newsgroup postings or any unsolicited email.

10. What is an Anti-Virus Software ?


Ans. There are a number of malicious software ('malware') programs that can cause
damage to computers. These include viruses, worms, Trojan horses (Trojans), malware,
spyware etc. Anti-virus software is designed to detect and block attacks from malware.
This software when wloaded, resides in memory and checks every operation if it is
malicious or not. If it finds any suspicious activity, it blocks that operation and saves our
computer.
