ELEC 3244 Homework Assignment #1

1. The system T in Figure 1 is known to be time invariant. When the inputs to the system are x1[n], x2[n],
and x3[n], the responses of the system are y1[n], y2[n], and y3[n], as shown.

Figure 1

(a) Determine whether the system T could be linear.

(b) If the input x[n] to the system T is δ[n], what is the system response y[n]?
(c) What are all possible inputs x[n] for which the response of the system T can be determined from
the given information alone?

2. Consider the system in Figure 2.

Figure 2

(a) Determine the impulse response h[n] of the overall system.

(b) Determine the frequency response of the overall system.
(c) Specify a difference equation that relates the output y[n] to the input x[n].
(d) Is this system causal? Under what condition would the system be stable?
3. Let 𝑋(𝑒 𝑗𝜔 ) denote the Fourier transform of the signal x[n] shown in Figure 3. Perform the following
calculations (no need to explicitly evaluate 𝑋(𝑒 𝑗𝜔 )).

Figure 3

(a) Evaluate 𝑋(𝑒 𝑗𝜔 )|𝜔=0

(b) Evaluate 𝑋(𝑒 𝑗𝜔 )|𝜔=𝜋
(c) Find ∠𝑋(𝑒 𝑗𝜔 )
𝜋
(d) Evaluate ∫−𝜋 𝑋(𝑒 𝑗𝜔 )𝑑𝜔
(e) Determine and sketch the signal whose Fourier transform is 𝑋(𝑒 −𝑗𝜔 )
(f) Determine and sketch the signal whose Fourier transform is 𝑅𝑒{𝑋(𝑒 𝑗𝜔 )}

4. Consider the LTI system with impulse response

𝑗
ℎ[𝑛] = ( )𝑛 𝑢[𝑛], 𝑤ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑒 𝑗 = √−1
2
Determine the steady-state response, i.e., the response for large n, to the excitation

𝑥[𝑛] = cos(𝜋𝑛) 𝑢[𝑛]

5. A causal LTI system has the following system function:

4 + 0.25𝑧 −1 − 0.5𝑧 −2
𝐻(𝑧) =
(1 − 0.25𝑧 −1 )(1 + 0.5𝑧 −1 )
(a) What is the ROC for H(z)?
(b) Determine if the system is stable or not.
(c) Determine the difference equation that is satisfied by the input x[n] and output y[n].
(d) Use a partial fraction expansion to determine the impulse response h[n].
(e) Find the output sequence y[n] when the input is 𝑥[𝑛] = 𝑢[−𝑛 − 1].
6. The pole-zero diagram in Figure 4 corresponds to the z-transform X(z) of a causal sequence x[n].
Sketch the pole-zero diagram of Y(z), where 𝑦[𝑛] = 𝑥[−𝑛 + 3]. Also, specify the ROC for Y(z).
