WYPO EXAMPLE PAPER

Category A (Grade 7,8 and 9)

1. In an announcement on a railway station, a passenger hears that the last train has passed
the station Δt1 = 30 min earlier than his train. On the next station that is s = 20 km away
from the previous station, in another announcement he hears that the first train arrived
Δt2 = 20 min earlier than his train. Reading time from his watch, he calculates average
speed of his train to be up = 60 km/h. Relying on the announcements and the passenger's
calculations, determine average speed of the first train.
A. 40 km/h
B. 50 km/h
C. 60 km/h
D. 70 km/h
E. 80 km/h

2. A traffic officer receives complaints on frequent traffic jams at a traffic signal on the
main street of a busy market. He studied the traffic pattern and to simplify calculations
made a reasonable assumptions that all the vehicles are identical in size and move with
identica1 speeds. At present, durations of red and the green signals are equal and
average speed of traffic advancement is v1 = 1.5 mis. For improvement in the situation,
if he orders to make duration of green signals η = 2 times and to leave that of red signals
unchanged, what would be average speed v2 of the traffic advancement?
A. 1 m/s D. 4 m/s
B. 2 m/s E. 5 m/s
C. 3 m/s

3. A ball is thrown vertically upwards. Its distance s from a fixed point varies with time t
according to the following graph. Calculate velocity of projection of the ball.

A. 10 m/s
B. 20 m/s
C. 30 m/s
D. 40 m/s
E. 50 m/s
Category B (Grade 10,11 and 12)

1. In the setup shown, magnitude of the force F exerted on the block A is so adjusted that
the block B and the ball C remain motionless relative to the block A without contact
between A and C. All surfaces in contact are frictionless.

Masses of these bodies are mA = 12 kg, mB = 5 kg and me = 3 kg respectively.

Acceleration of free fall is g = 10 m/s2. Find expression for the necessary force F.
a. 100 N d. 250 N
b. 150 N e. 300 N
c. 200 N

4. One end of a uniform rope of mass m = 3.0 kg placed on the ground is pulled by a force
F = 10√2 N in such a way that 17 = 2/3 of length of the rope remains at rests on the
ground in a straight line and rest of the rope in the air in the vertical plane containing
the portion of the rope on the ground. Find range of values of coefficient of friction
between the rope and the ground. Acceleration of free fall is g = 10 m/s2
a. 0,5
b. 0,4
c. 0,3
d. 0,2
e. 0,1

5. A train of mass M = 1000 ton is running with a uniform velocity on a level track.
Resistance to motion is proportional to the mass being pulled and pulling force of the
engine is a constant. The last carriage of mass m = 200 ton gets decoupled. The driver
discovers it after travelling a distance l = 100 m and instead of applying brakes, he
immediately shuts off the engine. When both the parts of the train come to rest, what is
the distances between them?
a. 125 m
b. 130 m
c. 135 m
d. 140 m
e. 145 m
Category C (Student College)
1. Look at the following picture!

A ball with a weight of 100 N and a radius of 50 cm is on an inclined plane at an angle

of 53o with the plane. Determine the minimum force required so that the ball can climb
a ladder as high as 25 cm if α = 37o!
a. 90,4 N d. 94,6 N
b. 91,4 N e. 95,2 N
c. 92,8 N

2. A solid ball of mass m and radius 1 m is rotating with an angular velocity of 3 rad/s
in free fall from a height of 2 m. The ball bounces off the floor with the same vertical
velocity. During the collision process, the surface of the ball slips relative to the
floor surface. The coefficient of kinetic friction between the ball and the floor is 0.5.
Assume that the duration of the collision is very short.

Then the angle formed by the velocity of the ball about the vertical axis just after
bouncing is...
a. 37o d. 60o
o
b. 45 e. 90o
c. 53o
