Why brew with the AeroPress?
The AeroPress was invented in 2005 by Aerobie
(better known for their ultimate flying frisbee) and it’s
president Alan Adler.

Among coffee aficionados, the AeroPress is a

revelation.

A small, $30 plastic device that resembles a plunger makes what many consider to be the
best cup of coffee in the world. Proponents of the device claim that drinks made with the
AeroPress are more delicious than those made with thousand-dollar machines.

There are many reasons to brew with an AeroPress but here are our top 5:

1. It’s a fast brew

It will take just a few minutes to produce an amazing tasting cup of coffee.
And because it’s so simple you’ll always get a great cup.

2. Pressure for flavor

Big coffee machines use pressure to release oils from the grinds, the
Aeropress also uses pressure (and a vacuum) which are created by the
brewer. This means a better richer flavor.

3. No fuss brew
Unlike a French press, the AeroPress is so simple in design that cleaning
takes just a few moments – empty the grind puck and rinse, job done.

4. Look like a pro Barista

Show off to your friends your amazing coffee brewing talents and look like
a pro whilst you do it.

AeroPress Brew Methods:
Traditional Method:

The traditional method is what

Aerobie provides to you when you
purchase the AeroPress
(download from aerobie.com).

While the traditional method is the

easiest and still provides a great
cup of coffee, it is not
recommended by Altura (and
most professional baristas).

The primary reasons are that you lose control of the brew time and do not fully extract the
coffee oils.

Nonetheless, if you’re in a hurry, the traditional method may be the only way to go.

Just be sure to use a fine espresso grind with your Altura filters to ensure the water does not
filter too quickly through your coffee.

Inverted Brewing Method:

The inverted brewing method is recommended for all ALTURA filters for the AeroPress coffee
maker.
This is the best way to make a cup of AeroPress coffee because you’re creating a full
immersion brew.
Below are instructions with detailed photos on how to brew inverted with the AeroPress and
ALTURA Metal Filters.

Wet the rubber piston and insert into the

Step 1 brewing chamber about ¼ inch. Stand the
AeroPress upside down

Pour the coffee ground in to the AeroPress

Step 2 chamber.

Slowly add the hot water. Pour the water in a

circular motion, ensuring that all of the coffee is
Step 3
saturated. Fill to the top of the circle around the
number “1”

Slowly stir for about 10 seconds (Stir slowly to
Step 4 reduce the drop in brewing temperature)

After about 1 minute. Place metal filter onto the

top of the brewer and secure with black filter
Step 5 cover by turning clockwise.

Carefully, with two hands, flip the brewer

upright, and rest it on the top of your mug. Apply
Step 6
slow, steady pressure on the piston (like a giant
coffee syringe). Be sure you are pushing
straight down, no angling. When you get close
to the bottom, you will begin to hear a hissing
noise. Remove the brewer from your mug when
this starts

Altura’s AeroPress Recipes
Basic Recipe

This basic brewing method requires that you have nothing more than everything that came
with your AeroPress purchase, an ALTURA Metal Filter, a coffee mug, and the ability to count
to one hundred.
This is the perfect beginner’s recipe for a great cup of AeroPress Coffee.

Inverted Method
Total
An Altura Filter Brewing
Time
One AeroPress scoop of espresso or medium grind coffee 1:40
8oz of hot water (brought to a boil then cooled)

1 A standard coffee mug can hold about 11oz of water. Fill your mug to about ¾ of an
inch below the rim. This should be about 8-9oz of water. Microwave water for 2-3
minutes. Keep an eye on the water an make sure it comes to a boil.

2 While water is heating in the microwave, set up the inverted AeroPress (Step 1) and
pour one scoop (using the scooper that comes with your aeropress) into the
chamber.

3 When water has come to a boil, stop the microwave; take out the mug and let sit
until it has stopped boiling. Water boils at 212 degrees. That is too hot and will burn
your coffee. Once it has cooled for a few seconds it should be at the prime 205
degrees.

4 Using the funnel, pour half of the water into the chamber and start counting to 100
(if you have a microwave with a timer, this may be easier). Stir until 20 seconds into
your count then pour the rest of the water into the chamber. At 90 seconds give it
another stir for 10 seconds.
5 Place metal filter along the rim of the chamber, lock on the cap, and flip the
AeroPress to upright position.
6 Slowly press for 30 seconds and stop when you start to hear a hissing noise.
7 Enjoy your cup of coffee

Advanced Recipe

The advanced brewing method requires that you have a few more accessories in order be
more precise about the recipe.
A hand grinder will be needed for freshness, a scale will be needed to get the right amount of
grounds and an electric kettle will be needed to have a consistent temperature of water
though out the brewing process.
What you will need…

Porlex JP-30 Stainless Steel Coffee Grinder (on Amazon)

Freshly ground beans will take your coffee to a whole other level. This grinder is
the perfect accessory to you AeroPress kit as it fits perfectly inside the AeroPress
when travelling.

Wrenwane Digital Kitchen Timer (on Amazon)

A timer will improve the accuracy of your brew times. While a microwave timer will
work just fine. This timer is great for travel.

EatSmart Precision Pro - Multifunction Digital Kitchen Scale w/ Extra Large LCD
and 11 Lb. Capacity (on Amazon)
A scoop of espresso ground coffee is not the same mass as a scoop of coarse
ground coffee. The only way to get the accurate amount of coffee grounds for this
recipe is by measuring the weight of the grounds. Since this recipe needs an
electric kettle, the scale will be useful foraccurately pouring the correct amount of
water as well.

Bonavita 1-Liter Variable Temperature Digital Electric Gooseneck Kettle (on

Amazon)
This kettle has a temperature set feature that works perfect for this recipe. The
gooseneck spout is perfect for the AeroPress as well.

General tips:
Coffee lovers agree that grinding just before brewing is important for great flavor.
Remember too, that freshly roasted beans yield a richer flavor.

Pressing slowly is the key to a rich brew and an easy push. If it feels too stiff, just press
more gently.

Avoid the dry wheeze. When pressing your aeropress, once all water has been removed
from the grinds you will get a “dry wheeze”. This means that you’ve probably gone too far.
The dry wheeze often means that you are pushing the last bits of flavor from your grind,
more often than not these are bitter notes that very few people would like in a brew.

To avoid this stop your press just before the last bit of water leaves the chamber – this may
take some practice.

Never put the AeroPress in a dishwasher. After cleaning, always store the AeroPress with
the plunger pushed all the way in, or completely removed, to avoid compressing the seal.

Experiment! All coffees are different in taste, some rich – some smooth, some nutty –
some fruity, because of this you will need to experiment to get the best results from your
Aeropress.
We advise you experiment with: Timing (bloom time, stand time), Amount of coffee (richer
types may mean less is needed) and Temperature (perfection can be anywhere from 80c
to 95c).
