Assignment 1 ENG1501

Section 1: Reflective essay

Poetry is not one of my strong points, it can be very confusing especially when the author writes
“artistically” for a lack of a better word. I used to think that poems are not something that I can relate
to, but after working through the activities within the tutorials, I do seem to have a better
understanding of poetry. I used to have a very stereotypical outlook on poetry, but after working
through the activities I realised poems are not just about rhyming words.

I enjoyed the poem “Bring the statues back” by Ingrid De Kock, under the e-book reserves on the Unisa
website as well as the activity on page 9 of the tutorial “ENG1501/501/0/2024”. I learned in order to
understand I need to do a little bit of research, the research component assisted me with the context of
the poem, although I veered off a little bit on the research part. Important factor for me during the
activity was to understand the meaning of the words used in the poem.

I wouldn’t say I had a difficult part, just allot of reading in order to make analysis and to ask critical
questions to allow myself to think on more than one level. Looking at the prescribed material of the
tutorial “ENG1501/501/0/2024” under the heading” Engaging with the question on page 13 having to
keep so many aspects in sight such as:

What is the poem’s stance, what is the poem saying and why the poem says what it says questions takes
time, but I know practice makes perfect.

Poetry is not just rhyming words but it is also about how one needs to construct sentences, it is about
figure of speeches, personifications, mood, tone, form, rhythm and rhyme. I enjoyed the notes and the
activities and the fact that I now have a better understanding, but practice will make me perfect.

Section B: ‘My Book’ – M. Xaba

1.1 The setting is in her bedroom because she mentions in line one ‘My book has never been too tired
to go to bed with me’. In line two of the poem ‘It never has a headache…. Indicating a person that
just want to out their head on the pillow and sleep.
1.2 Figure of speech used is personification attributes a living quality to an inanimate object page 88.
Example: “It never says: please not now, I am not in the mood.

2.1 The change happens in lines four to seven, the speaker moves from relating the book's behavior to
her opinion of her book. The word "seduces" in the first three lines, demonstrate the book's appeal and
how the writer respond to her book.

2.2 The tone in lines four to seven is warm and demonstrative. The words "yields to my gaze" and
"yearning for my touch" reflects an intimate closeness and longing, showing the writer’s sensitive
connection with the book. This tone exposes the writer’s deep relationship with her book, describing it
as a foundation of coziness and emotive serenity.
2.3 The sound device used in the given lines is alliteration. Alliteration is the repetition of initial
consonant sounds in neighboring words. In the provided lines, the alliteration is illustrated by the
repetition of the "s" sound in the words "seduces" and "spine" from line 4.

2.4 In lines four to seven of M. Xaba's poem, the poet uses the punctuation mark of a comma. The
comma creates a pause in the rhythm of the poem, breaking the flow of the lines. This pause serves
to emphasize the words that come before and after it, creating a sense of anticipation or reflection,
and drawing attention to the meaning of the words.

3.1 Imagery: Line eight: ‘With tenderness it lays its pages bare before me’. Line nine: ‘and speaks words
that carry me through waves of emotions’ the speaker views her book as herself, a sense of comfort and
oneness, transparency, likeness there is a deep-seated connection between the writer and her book,
almost as if they understand each other.

4.1 The theme of the poem "My Book" is all about a twin the dep seated intimacy, the understanding
and bond showed using the imagery words and language used. There is a deep understanding between
the speaker and her book they know what to give each other to share happiness, peace and joy there is
a harmonious.
