Assignment 2 Mass Transfer

1. A saturated liquid feed of 200 mol/h at the boiling point (q = 1) containing 42 mol %
heptane and 58 mol % ethyl benzene is to be fractionated at 101.32 kPa to give a
distillate containing 97 mol % heptane and a bottoms containing 1.1 mol% heptane. The
reflux ratio used is 2.5 : 1. Calculate the mol/h distillate, mol/h bottoms, and the
theoretical number of trays using the McCabe – Thiele method. Equilibrium data are
given below at 101.32 kPa pressure for the mole fraction heptane xH and yH.

2. It is desired to absorb 90% of the acetone in a gas containing 1 mol% acetone in air in a
counter current stage tower. The total inlet gas flow to the tower is 30 kg mol / hr, and the
total inlet pure water flow to be used to absorb the acetone is 100 kg mol H2O/h. The
process operates isothermally at a temperature of 300 K and a total pressure of 101.3 kPa.
The equilibrium relation for the acetone in the gas liquid is yA = 2.45 xA. Determine the
number of theoretical stages required for this separation by using Kremser equation.

3. A mixture weighing 1000 kg contains 35 wt% acetic acid and 65 wt% water and is to be
extracted by 400 kg isopropyl ether in a single-stage extraction. By using below graphs,
determine the amounts and compositions of the extract and raffinate phases.
