1. Determine the total active thrust and passive earth resistance on a vertical smooth
retaining wall of height 5 m. The soil properties are: ϕ=32° and γ =17 kN/m3. The
water table is well below the base of the retaining wall. (Assume the wall can move
towards and away from the retaining wall).
2. A vertical retaining wall supports 10 m of a granular backfill having the following
properties: ϕ = 28° and γ = 18 kN/m3 (Figure). The water table is at a depth of 3 m
from the horizontal backfill. The saturated unit weight below the water table is γsat
= 19.5 kN/m3. Determine the total active earth thrust and its point of application.
3. A retaining wall having a smooth vertical back supports the soil as shown in Figure.
Determine the total active thrust acting on the wall.
4. Check the design of the gravity retaining wall shown in Figure. The bearing pressure
of the foundation soil should not exceed 450 kPa. Assume the unit weight of the wall
= 23.5 kN/m3.
5. The properties of the soil retained behind a smooth retaining wall are shown in
Figure. Determine the total active earth thrust acting on the back of the wall using a
pressure distribution diagram.
6. The section of a cantilever retaining wall is shown in Figure. The backfill has the
following properties: c = 0; ϕ = 41° and γ =16 kN/m3.
The water table is at a considerable depth below the ground surface. The angle of friction
δ between the base of the wall and the soil can be taken as 2ϕ/3. The backfill carries a uniform
surcharge load of 35 kPa. Check the stability of the retaining wall. Assume the unit weight of
concrete as 24 kN/m3. The safe being capacity of the soil below the base is 200 kPa.
