Introduction:

With the advent of technology, tools and equipment in cleaning used by the
housekeeping staff in various areas of the hotel to make the job easier and faster. To
keep the hotel premises to the highest standards of appearance at all times,
housekeeping staff utilize various cleaning equipment.

Advantages of Cleaning Equipment

Cleaning equipment comes in varying sizes, shapes, voltages and usages. The
cleaning equipment are advantageous in many ways:

1. Save cleaning time of housekeeping staff


2. Clean more efficiently than manual labor
3. Produce more output and reduce more work fatigue
4. Reach any corner or height of an area which is difficult to reach by manual
labor
5. Some are ecofriendly and user friendly

Classification of Cleaning Equipment

Equipment may be classified as manual cleaning equipment that needs no


electricity to function and electric equipment which, based on the term itself, requires
electricity.

A. Manual Cleaning Equipment

1. Chambermaid’s Trolley/Housekeeping Trolley- This trolley is large


enough to keep all the guestroom and guest bathroom supplies such as
linens in a organized manner. This is used to stock a given number of
linens, equipment and supplies to service an allotted number of
guestrooms. It makes housekeeping staff to move it around and carry
large number of items in one go while keeping and cleaning the
guestrooms. It also helps in transporting used bed and bath linens in
chutes thus preventing strain and back injuries of room attendants.

2. Janitor’s Trolley- A highly mobile trolley fitted with shelves and waste
receptacles that store cleaning supplies such as detergents, spray bottles,
dustbin, mop, and dusting cloths, all in one compact manner. It can be
moved around easily. It fulfills the challenge of modern-day housekeeping
in hotels.

3. Mop and Mop Wringer- Mops can be made of cotton for high absorption
ability. Mops have different kinds such as string mops, dust mops, flat
mops and synthetic. A mop wringer is a wheeled bucket that squeezes out
the water from the mop without getting the hands dirty.

4. Carpet Sweeper- used to pick up dirt in carpeted floors.

B. Electrical Equipment

1. Vacuum Cleaner- Most commonly used cleaning equipment in


housekeeping. It comes with a suction motor fit in a case, a hose and
various attachments for different cleaning requirements. It can be an
upright vacuum cleaner, used to clean dust particles in carpeted floors
or the wet and dry vacuum cleaner, used for cleaning wet and dry
surfaces.

2. Polishing Machine- used to add shine to floors of frequently visited


areas of the hotel.

3. Scrubber- an equipment that is used when mopping doesn’t suffice. It


is used for scrubbing stubborn and sticky stains on the floors of the
hotel.

4. Dry Foam Machine- machine with pressure tank filled with water
solution and shampoo to clean water- sensitive carpets, needle felt and
other carpet types whose construction inhibits sufficient water
extraction.

7. Spray bottles
8. Broom
9. Dustpan
10. Bucket and dipper
11. Brushes – toilet bowl brush, cobweb brush, shoe polish brush
12. Dustbins

14. Gloves
15. Mask
16. Eye goggles
17. Safety shoes
18. Warning signs
19. Tongs – used to pick-up cigarette butts and other objects for sanitary and
safety purposes.

Cleaning Agents or Chemicals

Aside from tools and equipment, housekeeping department also uses cleaning
chemicals in ensuring cleanliness and sanitation in the hotel property. It helps in
removing offensive odor and avoids spreading of dirt and contaminants. These
chemicals may be in the form of liquid, powder or sometimes blocks which are diluted in
the right amount. Sot water is used as hard water cannot dilute detergents properly.

1. Water- the most common cleaning agent


2. Vinegar- helps in removing light stains in guest bathroom
3. All-purpose cleaners- used to remove all types of dirt
4. Glass Cleaners- used to clean glass surfaces
5. Bathroom cleaners-chemical that contains phosphoric acid used in
cleaning and disinfecting the bathroom walls, bathtubs, bathroom flooring,
tiles, sinks and showers.
6. Disinfectants- help in killing or destroying disease-carrying
microorganisms
7. Metal polishers- used to polish metal fixtures
8. Clean air spray- used to eliminate odors and pungent smells in public
areas such as hallways, powder rooms and reception areas.
9. Degreaser- used in removing grease in guest amenities such as lipstick
stain on coffee cups and glasses. It contains organic solvents to help
dissolve oils and fats. Some combine a certain amount of vinegar and
baking soda to battle grease stains.
10. Floor cleaners and sealers- particularly used in floors that are busy and
experience heavy traffic such as hallways, corridors and restaurants. It
prevents wear to the surface, remove stain and dirt and grit and beautify
floor. It also restores the original look and shine of the floor
11. Detergents- used in washing uniforms, linens and other cloths used in the
hotel operations. Detergents are normally harmless for skin and goes well
with both hard and soft water.
12. Bleach- normally used in laundry purposed that helps in maintaining the
white linens in its original color
13. Softener- helps in maintain the linens and other types of soft cloth
14. Swimming pool cleaners- used to clean the pool and kills the bacteria
and algae growth in the water.

Other chemicals used in housekeeping may include the following:


1. Ammonia
2. Wood polish
3. Insecticides
4. Muriatic Acids
5. Drain cleaners
