Let us start!
Here are the amazing steps in
transforming the general form into vertex
form of quadratic function.
Let’s see how it transforms.
Follow the footsteps!
STEPS TO FOLLOW!
Transforming general form y = ax2 + bx + c into the vertex form
y = a (x – h)2 + k.
Important Note!
Great transformation
just happened! The vertex is at point
As the General form (h, k) where
transformed to vertex form, h = -b and k = 4ac - b2

1 Illustrative Example
STEPS ILLUSTRATIONS
1. Write the given y = x2 - 4x - 10
2. Group together the terms containing x y = (x2 - 4x) - 10
3. Factor out a. Here, a = 1. y = (x2 – 4x) – 10
4. Complete the expression in the parenthesis to y = (x2 – 4x + 4) – 10 – 4
make it a perfect square trinomial by adding a
constant (-4/2)2 = (-2)2 = 4 and subtracting the
same value from the constant term.
5. Simplify and express the perfect square y = (x – 2)2 – 14
trinomial as a square of binomial
The vertex form of y = x2 – 4x – 10 is y = (x - 2)2 - 14.
where, h = 2 and k = -14, thus the vertex is (2, -14).
Bravo!
The example above helped me master
more my skills in transforming quadratic
function in general form into vertex form.
2 Illustrative Example
STEPS ILLUSTRATIONS
1. Write the given 1. y = 2x2 + 8x - 12
2. Identify the values of a, b and c. 2. a = 2, b = 8, c = - 12

You have seen in the illustrative examples that quadratic function in general form
y = ax2 + bx + c can be transformed into vertex form y = a(x - h)2 + k where point
(h,k) is the vertex of the quadratic function. This process will be easier if you know
how to express square of binomial to perfect square trinomial and vice versa.
Directions: Match the given square of binomial to its corresponding product in Set A, and
the given perfect square trinomial to its corresponding factors in Set B. Show your answer
by shading the corresponding products and factors with the same color shown in the given.

In the next activity, you will apply the steps in transforming quadratic function
y = ax2 + bx + c into vertex form y = a (x - h)2 + k. These steps will lead you in
determining the values of h and k, wherein (h, k) are the coordinates of the vertex
of quadratic function
Directions: Transform the given quadratic function into the for y = a (x – h)2 + k by
following the steps below. “MY TURN” column is already done for you, Now, it’s “YOUR
TURN” to fill your column with correct answers.
Complete the
4 expression in the y = (x2 + 8x + __ ) - 7 - __
parenthesis to
make it a perfect y = (x2 + 8x + 16) -7 - 16
square trinomial.
Express the
perfect square y = (x + 4)2 - 7 - 16
