You have seen how quadratic function

transformed to vertex form. This time let’s have
examples to enlighten you more on this topic.
Check this out!

1 Illustrative Example

Transform y = x2 – 4x – 10 in the form y = a (x - h)2 + k and then identify the

vertex of the given quadratic function.

STEPS ILLUSTRATIONS
1. Write the given y = x2 - 4x - 10
2. Group together the terms containing x y = (x2 - 4x) - 10
3. Factor out a. Here, a = 1. y = (x2 – 4x) – 10
4. Complete the expression in the parenthesis to y = (x2 – 4x + 4) – 10 – 4
make it a perfect square trinomial by adding a
constant (-4/2)2 = (-2)2 = 4 and subtracting the
same value from the constant term.
5. Simplify and express the perfect square y = (x – 2)2 – 14
trinomial as a square of binomial
The vertex form of y = x2 – 4x – 10 is y = (x - 2)2 - 14.
where, h = 2 and k = -14, thus the vertex is (2, -14).

Bravo!
The example above helped me master
more my skills in transforming quadratic
function in general form into vertex form.

2 Illustrative Example

Convert the quadratic function y = 2x2 + 8x - 12 in the form y = a (x - h)2 + k by

applying the formula of h and k.

STEPS ILLUSTRATIONS
1. Write the given 1. y = 2x2 + 8x - 12
2. Identify the values of a, b and c. 2. a = 2, b = 8, c = - 12

3. Apply the formula for 3.

4.

4. Apply the formula for

Substitute the values of a, h and k in 5. y = 2(x + 2)2 - 20

y = a (x – h)2 + k.
Since the vertex is at point (-2, - 20) where h = -2 and k = - 20,
then, the vertex form is y = 2(x + 2)2 - 20.

You have seen in the illustrative examples that quadratic function in general form
y = ax2 + bx + c can be transformed into vertex form y = a(x - h)2 + k where point
(h,k) is the vertex of the quadratic function. This process will be easier if you know
how to express square of binomial to perfect square trinomial and vice versa.

ACTIVITY 1 TRANSFORM MY COLOR

Directions: Match the given square of binomial to its corresponding product in Set A, and
the given perfect square trinomial to its corresponding factors in Set B. Show your answer
by shading the corresponding products and factors with the same color shown in the given.
