history of
south africa
The Union of South Africa was born in 1910,
with five million inhabitants. In 1911, the
Afrikaners and the British put in place the
first laws of Apartheid, or separate
development. Black elite resistance
movements organized in 1912 and the African
National Congress (ANC) took its name in
1923. The history of South Africa is very rich
and very complex due to the juxtaposition of
different peoples and cultures which have
succeeded and rubbed shoulders since
prehistoric times. The Bushmen have been
there for at least 25,000 years and the Bantus
for at least 1,500 years.
