Assignment 1
Q1) In physics, there are four types of fundamental quantities. These are mass, length, time, and electric
charge. In dimensional analysis, they are represented by M, L, T, and Q correspondingly.
i) A particle's position is given by 𝑥(𝑡) = 𝐴𝑐𝑜𝑠 2 (𝐵𝑡), where 𝐴 and 𝐵 are constants and 𝑡 is time. Find
the dimensions of constants 𝐴 and 𝐵 in terms of the fundamental quantities.
2
ii) If the velocity of a particle is given by 𝑣(𝑡) = 𝛼𝑒 −𝛽𝑡 , find the dimensions of constants 𝛼 and 𝛽 in
terms of the fundamental quantities where 𝑡 is time.
Q5) Show that the volume of a parallelepiped with edges formed by the vectors 𝐴⃗, 𝐵
⃗⃗ and 𝐶⃗, is given by the
following: 𝐴⃗ ⋅ (𝐵
⃗⃗ × 𝐶⃗)
Q6) Compute the following determinant
to show that
Q10)The position of a particle is given by the following expression 𝑟⃗(𝑡) = 𝛼[−𝑐𝑜𝑠(𝛽𝑡)𝑖̂ + 𝑠𝑖𝑛(𝛽𝑡)𝑗̂] where
𝛼 and 𝛽 are constants 𝑖̂ and 𝑗̂ are the unit vectors corresponding to 𝑥 and 𝑦 axes in the two dimensional
Cartesian coordinate system, respectively.
i) Find the time dependent velocity and acceleration of the particle.
ii) How does the speed of the particle change over time?
iii) Find the magnitude of the acceleration of the particle.
iv) Do your answers to ii) and iii) contradict each other? Explain.
