Phys 121 Assignment 2:

Q1) A particle experiences a constant acceleration 𝛼. At 𝑡 = 𝑇, the particle's position and velocity are
observed to be 𝑥(𝑡 = 𝑇) = 𝛽 and 𝑣(𝑡 = 𝑇) = 𝛾, respectively. Find the following in terms of the given
quantities (𝛼, 𝛽, 𝛾, 𝑇 and 𝑡 whenever necessary).
a) The initial velocity,
b) The initial position,
c) The velocity as a function of time, and
d) The position as a function of time.

Q2) A particle's position 𝑥, and velocity 𝑣, are related by 𝑥 = −𝛼 ln(𝛽𝑣) where 𝛼 and 𝛽 are constants. The
particle is at the origin at 𝑡 = 0.
a) Express the position and then the velocity of the particle as a function of time
b) Find the initial velocity of the particle.

Q3) Vectors 𝐴⃗ and 𝐵 ⃗⃗ = α𝑖̂ + β𝑘̂ where 𝛼 and 𝛽 are constants and, 𝑖̂, 𝑗̂ and 𝑘̂
⃗⃗ are given by 𝐴⃗ = 2𝑖̂ − 𝑗̂ and 𝐵
are the unit vectors corresponding to 𝑥, 𝑦 and 𝑧 axes in the Cartesian coordinate system, respectively. If
𝜋
the angle between these vectors is 3 and the magnitude of vector 𝐵 ⃗⃗ is √2, determine 𝛼 and 𝛽.
⃗⃗ are given by 𝐴⃗ = 𝑖̂ + 2𝑗̂ + 3𝑘̂ and 𝐵
Q4) Vectors 𝐴⃗ and 𝐵 ⃗⃗ = 2𝑖̂ − 2𝑗̂ − 𝑘̂ where 𝑖̂, 𝑗̂ and 𝑘̂ are the unit vectors
corresponding to 𝑥, 𝑦 and 𝑧 axes in the Cartesian coordinate system, respectively. Another vector 𝐶⃗ lies
on the 𝑦𝑧 plane. If 𝐶⃗ is perpendicular to 𝐴⃗ × 𝐵
⃗⃗ and it is a unit vector, find the components of 𝐶⃗.

Q5) A particle is thrown into air with initial velocity 𝑣⃗0 making angle of 𝜃0 with the horizontal. The has a
gravitational acceleration 𝑔⃗ and a time-dependent acceleration due to a wind in the +𝑥 direction as shown
in the figure below. The acceleration due to the wind is given by 𝑎𝑤 = 𝑎0 𝑡 where 𝑎0 is a constant. Find
the following:

a) The time it takes to reach the maximum height,

b) The maximum height,
c) The time of flight,
d) The range of the motion.

Q6) The position of a particle in a circular motion is given by 𝑟⃗(𝑡) = 𝐴{cos[𝜃(𝑡)]𝑖̂ + sin[𝜃(𝑡)]𝑗̂} where 𝐴 is
a constant, 𝜃(𝑡) is the angular position, 𝑖̂ and 𝑗̂ are the unit vectors corresponding to 𝑥 and 𝑦 axes in the
two dimensional Cartesian coordinate system, respectively. Find
i) The radius of the path
ii) The angle between the position and the acceleration of the particle
iii) the angle between the velocity and the acceleration of the particle

Q7) The angular position of a particle undergoing circular motion is given by 𝜃(𝑡) = βt 3 where 𝛽 is a positive
constant. The radius of the circular path is 𝑅. Express the acceleration of the particle in the two
dimensional polar coordinate system. Note that the acceleration has tangential and radial components.
Q8) A particle starts moving in a circular path of radius 𝑅 with the following speed 𝑣(𝑡) = 𝛽𝑒 𝛾𝑡 where 𝛽 and
𝛾 are positive constants. Find the time for the particle to complete the first two full revolutions in the
path.
Q9) The position of a particle with mass 𝑚 is given as 𝑟⃗(𝑡) = 𝐴𝑡 3 𝑖̂ + 𝐵𝑡 2 𝑗̂ + 𝐶𝑡𝑘̂ where 𝐴, 𝐵 and 𝐶 are
constants and 𝑡 is time. At 𝑡 = 𝜏, two external forces 𝐹⃗1 = 𝛼𝑖̂ + 𝛽𝑗̂ + 𝛾𝑘̂ and 𝐹⃗2 act on the particle 𝛼, 𝛽,
and 𝛾 are constants. Find 𝐹⃗2 at that instant.

Q10)A horizontal external force 𝐹 is applied to a block of mass 3𝑀 so that it moves horizontally as shown in
the figure below. The coefficient of friction force between the block of mass 4𝑀 and the ground is 𝜇
while the coefficient of friction force between the blocks is 𝜇. Find the acceleration of the blocks. Hint:
you need to consider multiple cases depending on the comparison of 𝐹 and 𝜇𝑀𝑔. Gravitational
acceleration is 𝑔.

Q11) A block of mass 𝑀 is attached to a negligible mass of string of length ℓ and rotates on a frictionless
horizontal table as shown below. The block starts the motion at 𝜃 = 0 and its speed is given as a function
𝜋
of time, 𝑡, as 𝑣 = 𝐴 𝑡 2 where 𝐴 is a positive constant. Find the tension in the string at 𝜃 = 4 .

Q12) An Atwood machine is placed in an elevator accelerating downward with a constant acceleration 𝐴 as
shown in the figure below. Gravitational acceleration is 𝑔. Find the accelerations of the blocks with
respect to

i) the elevator (non-inertial reference frame) and

ii) the ground (inertial reference frame).
Q13) A small block of mass 𝑚 is placed in a box of mass 𝑀 and they are connected to a block of mass 𝑀 via
string as shown in the figure below. There is no friction between the box and the surface of the ground
whereas the coefficient of friction force between the block of mass 𝑚 and the box is given by 𝜇.
(Gravitational acceleration is 𝑔, the string and the pulley are massless, there is no friction between them,
and the string is inextendible.) The system is released from rest. When does the small block of mass m
hit the edge of the box which is ℓ away from the block?

Q14) A particle of mass m has the following position vector 𝑟⃗(𝑡) = 𝐴𝑡 3 𝑖̂ + 𝐵𝑡𝑗̂ + 𝐶𝑘̂ where 𝐴, 𝐵 and 𝐶 are
constants and 𝑡 is time. Calculate the kinetic energy of the particle as a function of time.
