1. A current I is flowing in an infinitely long conductor bent into the shape shown in Fig. If the radius of the curved [2]

2. A horizontal overhead power line carries a current of 90 A in east to west direction. What is the magnitude and [2]
direction of the magnetic field due to the current 1.5 m below the line?
3. Two identical coils Pand Q each of radius R are lying in perpendicular planes such that they have a common [2]
centre. Find the magnitude and direction of the magnetic field at the common centre of the two coils, if they

carry currents equal to I and √3I respectively.

4. A wire of length L is bent round in the form of a coil having N turns of same radius. If a steady current I flows [2]
through it in a clockwise direction, find the magnitude and direction of the magnetic field produced at its centre.
5. A long wire is bent as shown in the given figure. Find the magnitude and direction of the magnetic field at the [2]
centre O of the circular part, if a current I is passed through the wire.

6. A long straight wire in the horizontal plane carries a current of 50 A in the north to south direction. Give the [2]

12. Two identical circular loops, P and Q, ucK of radius r and carrying currents I and 21 respectively are lying in [2]
parallel planes such that they have a common axis. The direction of current in both the loops is clockwise as
seen from O which is equidistant from the both loops. Find the magnitude of the net magnetic field at point O.

13. Two identical circular wires P and Q, each of radius r and carrying current I are kept in perpendicular planes, [2]
such that they have a common centre as shown in figure. Find the magnitude and direction of the net magnetic
field at the common centre of the two coils.

14. A long wire bent as shown in the given figure. What will be the magnitude and direction of the field at the centre [2]
O of the circular portion, if a current I is passed through the wire? Assume that the various portions of the wire
do not touch at point P.

15. Two identical circular loops P and Q, each of radius r and carrying equal currents are kept in the parallel planes [2]
having a common axis passing through O. The direction of current in P is clockwise and in Q is anti-clockwise
as seen from O which is equidistant from the loops P and Q. Find the magnitude of the net magnetic field at O.

18. A straight wire carrying a current of 12 A is bent into a semicircular arc of radius 2.0 cm as shown in the given [2]

wire were bent into a semicircular arc of the same radius but in the opposite way as shown in given figure (b).

19. Figure shows a current loop having two circular segments and joined by two radial lines. Find the magnetic field [2]

22. A charge 2Q is spread uniformly over an insulated ring of radius R/2. What is the magnetic moment of the ring [2]

23. Using Biot-Savart's law, derive the expression for the magnitude of the magnetic field at the centre of a circular [2]

27. a. i. A circular loop of area A⃗, carrying a current I is placed in a uniform magnetic field B⃗ . Write the
expression for the torque τ ⃗ acting on it in a vector form.
ii. If the loop is free to turn, what would be its orientation of stable equilibrium? Show that in this
orientation, the flux of net field (external field + the field produced by the loop) is maximum.
b. Find out the expression for the magnetic field due to a long solenoid carrying a current I and having n
number of turns per unit length.
28. Two infinitely long straight wires A1 and A2 carrying currents I and 2I flowing in the same direction are kept d [2]

distance apart. Where should a third straight wire A3 carrying current 1.5 I be placed between A1 and A2 so that

it experiences no net force due to A1 and A2? Does the net force acting on A3 depend on the current flowing
through it?
29. Two very long, straight, parallel wires A and B carry currents of 10 A and 20 A respectively and are at a distance [2]
20 cm apart, as shown in Fig. If a third wire C (length 15 cm) having a current of 10 A is placed between them,
how much force will act on C ? The direction of current in all the three wires is same.

30. Explain, why two wires carrying currents in opposite directions repel each other. [2]
31. a. State Ampere's circuital law. Use this law to obtain the expression for the magnetic field inside an air cored [2]
toroid of average radius 'r', having 'n' turns per unit length and carrying a steady current I. Show that the
magnetic field in the open space inside and exterior to the toroid is zero.
b. An observer to the left of a solenoid of N turns each of cross-section area 'A' observes that a steady current I
in it flows in the clockwise direction. Depict the magnetic field lines due to the solenoid specifying its
polarity and show that it acts as a bar magnet of magnetic ll moment m = NIA.

32. A magnetic field of 100 G (1G = 10-4T) is required which is uniform in a region of linear dimension about 10 [2]

cm and area of cross section about 10-3m2. The maximum current carrying capacity of a given coil of wire is 15

A and the number of turns per unit length that can be wound round a core is at most 1000 turns m-1. Suggest
some appropriate design particulars of a solenoid for the required purpose. Assume the core is not ferromagnetic.

a. Magnetic field lines can be entirely confined within the core of a toroid, but not within a straight solenoid.
Why?
b. Does a bar magnet exert a torque on itself due to its own field? Justify your answer.
c. When an electron revolves around a nucleus, obtain the expression for the magnetic moment associated with
it.
37. What is the force on a wire of length 4.0 cm inside a solenoid near its centre, making an angle of 60° with its [2]
axis? The wire carries a current of 12 A and the magnetic field due to the solenoid has a magnitude of 0.25T.
Section B
38. A fine pencil of β -particles, moving with a speed v, enters a region (region 1), where a uniform electric and a [3]
uniform magnetic field are both present. These P -particles then move into region II where only the magnetic
field (out of the two fields present in region I), exists. The path of the β -particles, in the two regions, is shown
in Fig.

i. State the direction of the magnetic field.


ii. State the relation between 'E' and 'B' in the region I.
iii. Drive the expression for the radius of the circular path of the β -particle in region II.
If the magnitude of the magnetic field, in region II, is changed to n times its earlier value, (without changing the
magnetic field in the region I) find the factor by which the radius of this circular path would change.
39. A current of 1.0 A is flowing in the sides of an equilateral triangle of side 4.5 × 10-2 m. Find the magnetic field [3]

at the centroid of the triangle.


40. A current I = 5.0 A flows along a thin wire shaped as shown in the given figure. The radius of the curved part of [3]

the wire is equal to R = 120 mm, the angle 2ϕ = 90o. Find the magnetic induction of the field at point O.

41. A straight wire carrying a current of 12 A is bent into a semi-circular arc of radius 2.0 cm as shown in Fig. (a). [3]

a. What is the magnetic field due to the straight segments?
b. In what way the contribution to B from the semicircle differs from that of a circular loop and in what way
