Ozone Layer Depletion
Part A:

1.0 Brief Introduction

The ozone layer is a critical component of Earth's atmosphere located in the
stratosphere, approximately 10 to 30 kilometers above the Earth's surface. It
plays a vital role in shielding the planet from the sun's harmful ultraviolet (UV)
radiation. Ozone gas (O₃) absorbs the majority of UV radiation, preventing it
from reaching the Earth's surface, which helps protect living organisms from
skin cancer, cataracts, and other health issues. Over the years, however, the
ozone layer has been subject to depletion, primarily due to human activities
involving the release of ozone-depleting substances (ODS) like
chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs). This depletion poses a significant threat to human
health and the environment.

Part B
Detailed Analysis
1.0 Brief Introduction
The ozone layer is essential for life on Earth. Its depletion due to human activity
poses significant risks not just to human health, but to entire ecosystems.
Addressing this issue requires a collective effort from individuals, communities,
and governments worldwide.

2.0 Aim of the Micro-Project

This project aims to focus on identifying effective measures and alternatives for
the protection of the ozone layer. Understanding how daily activities contribute
to ozone depletion can help individuals make informed choices to mitigate their
impact.

4
3.0 Course Outcomes
• Equip students with knowledge regarding environmental science
principles.
• Encourage participation in community-based environmental initiatives.
• Foster a sense of responsibility towards sustainable living practices.

4.0 What is Ozone Layer Depletion?

Ozone layer depletion refers to the reduction of ozone (O₃) in the stratosphere
due to the accumulation of ozone-depleting substances. The most significant
contributors are CFCs, halons, and other chemicals used in refrigeration, air
conditioning, and aerosol propellants. These substances, once released into the
atmosphere, break down ozone molecules, leading to thinner ozone layers and
increased UV radiation reaching the Earth's surface.

5
5.0 Effects on Environment
• Major Effects on Humans:
o Skin Cancer: UV radiation increases the risk of skin cancer.
According to the World Health Organization, the incidence of skin
cancer has been on the rise globally, with millions diagnosed each
year.
o Eye Cataracts: Increased exposure to UV rays can lead to cataracts
and other serious eye conditions, potentially resulting in blindness.
o Immune System: UV radiation can weaken the immune system,
making individuals more susceptible to infections and diseases.

6
Major Effects on Environment:

o Ecosystem Disruption: The depletion of the ozone layer affects

plant growth, leading to disruptions in food chains. High levels of
UV radiation can stunt the growth of crops and other vegetation.
o Wildlife Impact: Increased UV exposure can harm wildlife,
particularly species that are sensitive to UV radiation, affecting
their reproduction and development.
