Instructional Material on Combinations

2-35 Number of ways of doing a job

Suppose that a job has 2 different parts. There are m different ways of doing the first
part and n different ways of doing the second part. The problem is to find the number
of ways of doing the entire job. For each way of doing the first part of the job, there
are n ways of doing the second part. Since there are m ways of doing the first part,
the total number of ways of doing the entire job is m 3 n. The formula that can be
used is
Number of ways 5 m 3 n
For any problem which involves 2 actions or 2 objects, each with a number of
choices, and asks for the number of combinations, the formula can be used. For
example: A man wants a sandwich and a drink for lunch. If a restaurant has 4 choices
of sandwiches and 3 choices of drinks, how many different ways can he order his
lunch?
Since there are 4 choices of sandwiches and 3 choices of drinks, using the formula
Number of ways 5 4(3)
5 12
Therefore, the man can order his lunch 12 different ways.

Practice Exercises for 2-35 2. How many different 2-digit numbers

4. How many different sheets of paper are there if paper comes in three sizes and each size
comes in either a red, green or white color?

2-36 Number of members belonging to groups

Suppose there are two groups, each with a certain number of members. Some mem-
bers of one group also belong to the other group. The problem is to find how many
members there are in the 2 groups altogether. To find the numbers of members
altogether, use the following formula:

65
162 • gruber’s complete sat math workbook

Total number of members 5 Number of members in group I

1 Number of members in group II
2 Number of members common to both groups

For example: In one class, 18 students received As for English and 10 students
received As in math. If 5 students received As in both English and math, how many
students received at least one A?
In this case, let the students who received As in English be in group I and let those
who received As in math be in group II.
Using the formula:
Number of students who received at least one A
5 Number in group I 1 Number in group II 2 Number in both
        5 18 1 10 2 5 5 23
Therefore, there are 23 students who received at least one A.

In combination problems such as those on the preceding page,

the problems do not always ask for the total number. They may ask
for any of the four numbers in the formula while the other three are
given. In any case, to solve the problems, use the formula.

Practice Exercises for 2-36

1. 100 people joined clubs. 20 joined Club A, and 115 joined Club B. How
many people joined both clubs?

2. 75 people joined Club A and 50 people joined Club B. If 30 people

joined both clubs, how many people joined clubs?

3. 65 people were members of group I. 40 people were members of

group II. If one-half as many people belong to both groups, as the total
number of members, how many people belong to both groups?

4. Twice as many people belong to group I as those who belong to group

II. If 25 people belong to both groups and the total number of mem-
bers is 200, how many members belong to group I? To group II?
