Definitions
Line – A line is a mark made by a moving point in space. Line may be two or three-dimensional,
descrip- tive,implied, or abstract. Types of Lines; vertical, horizontal, diagonal, zigzag and curved.
Shape – Shape is two-dimensional, flat, limited to height and width. There are a few general
categories that are used to describe shape; geometric, free-form or organic-form.
Form – Form is three-dimensional and encloses volume; includes height, width and depth (as in a
cube, a sphere, a pyramid, or a cylinder).
Color – Color is made of three properties: hue, value, and intensity. Color can have high or low
intensity. High intensity can be described as bright and pure. Low intensity can be faint or
dull in color.
Value – Value has lightness or darkness of tones or colors. White is the lightest value; black is the
darkest. Value is important to drawing and painting, value changes are what creates contrast.
Space – Space is positive or negative areas defined or a sense of depth achieved in artworks.
Texture – Texture refers to the way things feel, or look as if they might feel if touched.
2 Dimension – Two dimensional shape or artwork only has two dimensions, such as width and
height and no thickness.
Symmetry – Symmetry is the quality of being made up of exactly similar parts facing each other or
around an axis.
