Science Lab Report Template

By the end of your lab investigation, you are expected to write a lab report. Your lab
report should include the following:

Title: A brief concise, yet descriptive title

Research question:

Write a question about the aim of the investigation. What is the purpose of this
experiment?

Hypothesis:

• Write a possible solution for the problem.

• Make sure this possible solution is a complete sentence.
• Make sure the statement is testable.
• The statement should reference the independent and dependent variables.
• Your prediction should be scientifically explained.

Variables:

Identify variables in the experiment as dependent, independent, and control.

• Dependent variables: elements being measured. How is the dependent

variable measured?

• Independent variables: elements being changed to see its effect.

• Control variables: elements being kept exactly the same throughout the
experiment. How are the control variables kept constant?

Materials and equipment:

Identify all materials and equipment used in the experiment. Do not forget to state
quantities (eg. X 3 test tubes) and sizes (eg. 100 cm3 beaker)of the equipment used.
Method (procedure):

• Write a numbered list which explains what you did in the lab.
• Your procedure should be written so than anyone else could repeat the
experiment.
• Make sure you include all the materials on your list and how they were used.
• Remember to add the safety measures required while performing the
experiment.
• Include the number of experimental groups and how will you vary them, what
will be your control group.

Apparatus used:

Sketch and label a diagram of your experimental set-up.( you can also take pictures
of your set up and post it here)

Data collected (observations) & presented:

1. Observations (Qualitative data): the data that deals with description, it can be
observed but not measured, you use your senses to describe your observations.

2.Numerical data (Quantitative data):

• Collect and record data using appropriate units of measurements.

• Organise and present data using appropriate communication modes such as

tables, graphs, diagrams, calculations ...etc.

Data collection table:

Graph:

Use excel to draw your graph, it must include a title and labeled axis.

Draw conclusions:

Describe your data. What does your graph show? Explain your results. Are there any
patterns in your results?
- Introduction sentence – “This experiment examined the…”

- Rewrite your hypothesis “The hypothesis for this lab was “If….””

- Was your hypothesis correct or incorrect?

- Explain why your hypothesis correct or incorrect using scientific ideas.

Explain your conclusions using scientific language and make sure it’s supported by
scientific judgements.

Evaluate results:

How reliable are your results? Do you have enough results to make a firm
conclusion?

Did you make any changes to your method during the experiment? Why did you
make these changes?

Were there any weaknesses in the method you used? How did these weaknesses
affect your results?

What improvements can you suggest to your method to make your results more
accurate or more reliable?

The use of this table is always useful:

Weakness/Limitation How the weakness Suggest improvement/s

impacted the results?
