JMG 454: GEOGRAPHY FIELD TRIP OR FIELDWORK

ASSIGNMENT

Working in quartets (groups of 4 people). Join the appropriate group on clickUP. Groups are
Phase Specific. All IP students form groups of 4 people; all SP & FET students form groups of
4 people.

Research, plan, design a worksheet, and organise: a field trip or fieldwork activity for your
specific class.

Studying CAPS carefully. Choose a topic in the geography section of Social Sciences or
Geography (FET) for which you can take the class on a field trip OR use fieldwork to teach
that topic.

Groups 1 to 17 (Intermediate Phase); Groups 18 to 77 (SP & FET).

In the Senior Phase, you can combine History and Geography (as the Social Sciences); and in
the FET, you might want to collaborate with another FET subject (e.g., Life Sciences, History
etc.); it is your choice. Try to include some mapwork or GIS where possible.

The rubric below will be used to mark the assignment (as a group); only ONE mark will be
assigned for each person in the group. Ensure everyone makes an equal contribution and
similar effort towards the ultimate outcome.

Assessing the activity:

Please note that categories don’t have equal weighting, so scan your rubric as a guide to assessing,
but don’t add up the columns to determine the mark. Looking at where most ticks are placed, I will
provide a mark based on the following:

80-100% - Excellent in all/almost all categories

70-79 % - Very good to excellent in all/almost all categories
60-69 % - Good (mostly good but some aspects may be very good/ excellent or mediocre)
50-59% - Mediocre – but several aspects of the activity need improving
40-49% - Poor – not yet competent at presenting a field activity
30% and below – Very poorly designed activity, poor presentation, not competent.
