What is physical fitness, its components, definition and examples

The physical fitness definition is the ability to perform daily tasks with ease, without
becoming tired, and with extra energy to enjoy leisure-time activities such as hobbies and
extra daily tasks. Physical fitness is when a person can execute daily activities with
maximum performance, endurance, and strength. A person that is physically fit can also
manage some health-related diseases, exhaustion, and undue stress.
5 components of physical fitness?

It determine how physically fit a person is.

1. Cardiovascular endurance - the ability to perform exercises at moderate-to-vigorous

intensities for a prolonged period of time.

Examples of activities that benefit from good cardio endurance include walking,
jogging, swimming, cycling, and other sports that require continuous movement.

Cardiovascular endurance, or cardio, is important for strengthening your heart

and lungs, which help to deliver oxygen and nutrients throughout your body.

2. Muscular strength - the ability of a muscle group to exert force or lift and carry weight.
The stronger your muscles, the heavier weight you can lift and move.

To ensure well-rounded muscular strength, it’s important to prioritize muscular

strength training of all major muscle groups like legs, arms, core, shoulders, back, and
hips.

Being physically strong helps you move and lift heavier objects with ease, which
can make day-to-day tasks much easier.

3. Muscular endurance - the ability of your muscles to sustain exercise for a period of
time.

For example, pilates, yoga, stair climbing, and long-distance activities are good
options.

Muscular endurance is how long your muscles can endure an exercise. It’s
important for longer duration exercise as it allows you to withstand exercise for longer
without getting fatigued.

4. Flexibility: the ability to move muscles and joints through a full range of motion of a
joint or group of joints without pain or difficulty

Examples of activities require more flexibility than others, such as gymnastics,

dance, and martial arts.

Endurance exercises that benefit from dynamic movement include biking,

running, and swimming, as well as sports activities like basketball, soccer, and
volleyball.

Regular stretching can help increase flexibility and may support your
performance in sports that require flexibility. Being flexible may help you perform daily
tasks easier and maintain better balance

5. Body composition: your body’s ratio of fat mass to fat-free mass like muscle and bone.

Body composition is the last health-related component of fitness. It describes the ratio of fat
mass to fat-free mass.

To achieve body composition, we need to focus on the other four areas of physical
fitness which is cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength, muscular endurance and
flexibility

Why do we need to engage in physical fitness?

Being physically active by partaking in physical activities is a must that could have a good impact on one's
health. Physically, emotionally, mentally, and overall well-being.

Partaking in physical activities increases energy levels that boost energy to keep up with daily activities,
improves balance and coordination, strengthens muscles, and helps in maintaining or losing weight. Being
physically active releases good body chemicals like endorphins that could help in making one feel good. It also
enhances sleep and mental clarity and boosts the immune system and metabolism. That reduces the risk of chronic
diseases, builds confidence, and enhances social life.
