Information and Communication

Technology
Day 9
Output Devices (what are they?

Once data has been input into a computer system and processed, it is now 'useful
information'. This information is ready to be output (sent out). In this section you will
learn about the different types of output devices that are commonly in use.
Output Devices - "Hardware devices that allow information to be sent out of a
computer system."
Breakdown of each output device
 Information about the device
 Uses of the device
 Advantages of the device
 Disadvantages of the device

Key Concepts of this section:

 Know the purpose of and be able to identify different output devices.
 Understand the uses of each output device.
 Be able to discuss advantages and disadvantages of each output device.

Year 2020
CRT Monitor (Cathode Ray Tube)

These are the old, bulky, heavy monitors that are still in use
today (although being used less and less). CRT's are also
used with light pens to allow drawings to be created on
screen. TFT's are replacing CRT's largely because they
produce a higher quality screen image and take up far less
space.
Uses
 To see outputs from the computer
 Used with light pens to make drawings on the screen

 Used with light pens to create drawings on screen

 Angle viewing is better than most TFT
 Produce a larger range of colours than TFT monitors
 Cheaper to buy than TFT screens.
 They are very large and bulky
 They create a lot of heat
 Consume more electric power than modern TFT monitors
 Prone to 'screen flicker' causing headaches & eye strain

Year 2020
TFT Monitors (Thin Film Transistor)

These are thin flat screened monitors that are commonly

seen today. Used with the newer desktop PC's, laptops and
mobile phones
Uses
 To see outputs from the computer
 Used as screens in laptops and also mobile phones

 Portable (lightweight)
 Take up less desk space (very thin)
 Consume much less electric power than CRT monitor.
 Emit less radiation than CRT monitors
 Produce less heat than CRT's.

 Images can appear unclear when viewed from an angle.

 Lower picture quality than CRT monitor
 Cannot be used with light pens yet
 Expensive to buy that CRT monitors

Year 2020
Light Emitting Diode (LED)

Modern LCD monitors are backlit using light emitting

diode (LED) technology. This gives the image better
contrast and brightness.

Uses
 generally used outdoors in store signs, destination
signs and billboards due to their level of brightness.

 Reach their maximum brightness almost immediately

 Give a whiter light which sharpens the image
 Higher resolution
 Much thinner monitors possible/lighter weight
 More reliable technology/longer lasting
 Consume very little power (electric power)
 Produce less heat
 Lower picture quality than CRT monitor
 Cannot be used with light pens yet
 More expensive compared to other monitors.

Year 2020
Laser Printer

Laser printers produce very high-quality hard copy output.

The print rate per page is very quick if a large number of
pages are being printed. They rely on large buffer memories,
where the data for the whole document is stored before the
pages can be printed out.
Uses
• Used where noise levels need to be kept low (office).
• Best option for fast high quality high volume printing.

 Very fast at printing documents.

 Toner cartridges last a long time.
 Very quiet when printing.
 Very high quality printouts.
 Reliable - don't breakdown as easily as inkjet printers.
 Cheaper to run than inkjets (low cost per page).
 Environmentally unfriendly (produce ozone).
 More expensive to buy (but cheap to run).
 They are larger compared to other types of printers.
 Slower than inkjet when printing one copy

Year 2020
Inkjet Printer

Inkjet's can print in both black and white and colour.

They work by spraying ink onto a page of paper.
Produce high quality hard copies (on paper). Ink is
stored in and delivered to the paper via an ink
cartridge.
Uses
 Good for few printouts (low volume).
 Ideal for single-page, very high quality printing.
 To print photographs
 Much cheaper to buy than laser printers.
 Smaller than laser printers so take up less space
 Do not produce ozone
 Very quiet whilst printing.
 Slow printing rates than laser printer
 Ink cartridges don’t last long (for small print jobs)
 Expensive to run (cartridges)
 Printouts can easily smudge

Year 2020
Dot Matrix Printer

Often called an ‘impact printer’ where pins are

pressed against an inked ribbon which produces an
imprint on paper. Work by using a set of pins to
press an inked ribbon against paper. Dot matrix
printers often use continuous stationary with
duplicate pages, ‘carbon-copies’
Uses
 Noisy and dirty environments (very robust)
 To make ‘carbon copies’
 Work just fine in dusty and dirty environments
 Can produce carbon copies
 Very cheap to maintain.(Very cheap ribbons)
 Good for continuous printing. (Pay slips)
 Very noisy when printing (striking of the pins)
 Very when printing (slowest)
 Very poor print quality. (Dots)

Year 2020
Plotter (Wide Area Printer)

Used to produce very large and accurate documents

such as blueprints (plans) for buildings. Plotters draw
images on the page using coloured pens which are
moved around the paper by a computer.
The 2 types of plotters
 Drum
 Flatbed.
Uses
 To produce large, accurate drawings
 To produce large signs

 Produce much larger printouts than other printers.

 The print quality is extremely high.
 Plotters can also 'cut out' designs for use in sign
making.
 Their print times are very slow
 Very expensive to buy and maintain.

Year 2020
3D Printer

3D printers allow us to print three dimensional solid

objects in almost any geometrical.
How it works.
3D digital copy is made and put in the software, then the
software slices the model into hundreds of layers. Printer
creates the model layer by layer. Binds them together
Uses
 Medical industry (ears) - Aviation industry (jet)
 Car models -Personal printing
 Fashion prototypes (shoes )
 Produce prototypes quickly.
 Reduced development costs.
 Find design flaws early.
 Your products hit the market earlier.
 Environmentally friendly.( Less waste and pollution)
 Most printed items are limited in size
 Anyone can print dangerous items (weapons)
 Copyright issues (now easy to print illegal replicas)
 High cost of 3D printers.

Year 2020
Speakers

Speakers can be connected directly to a computer

or are built into the monitor or casing (as in a
laptop computer). Digital data from the computer is
converted into analogue form, using a digital to
analogue converter (DAC). The signal is then
amplified through the speakers.
Uses
 Output sound from multimedia presentations
 Used in home entertainment
 Used by blind people to listen to words on the screen
instead of reading
 Used to play downloaded music and movies
 Everyone in the room can hear the sound.
 Help blind people use a computer
 The can use wireless technology (Bluetooth)
 Not personal (can disturb people trying to work)
 High quality speakers can be expensive.

B. Ngwenya BBDN – Academics IGCSE - ICT

Year 2020
Multimedia Projectors

These project whatever appears on a computer

monitor onto a very large screen so that large
numbers of people can view it. Multimedia
projectors are often hung from the roof on special
brackets.
Uses
 Classrooms - Training Presentations
 Offices
 Home cinema systems
 Enhance the viewers experience.
 Can display for many people (in presentation)
 Some projectors have built-in speakers.
 Lower image quality than computer screens
 Expensive than most monitors.
 Difficult to set up (need mounting)
 Cooling fans in the projector are noisy.
 The project lenses expire after certain hours
