Notes of Online class 1

Session 1

⋆ Open Geogebra - draw a rectangle in the grid mode– Measure area of the
rectangle using area tool– It is calculated as 12 × 2 = 24– Give suitable colour
to the rectangle and make it attractive
⋆ Draw another rectangles in the same page with the easures 8×3, 4×6, 24×1.
It can be noted that all these have equal area.
⋆ Sides of a rectangle can be changed without changing the area
⋆ Also note that a diagonal divides the rectangle into two equal area triangles.
⋆ In rectangles of equal area length is proportional to the breadth

Discussion - 1

1) There is a rectangle of sides 5cm and 4cm

a) What is the area of this rectangle?
b) What is the perimetre of this rectangle?
c) Give the integer side lengths of another two rectangles with the same area
d) What is the length of its diagonal?
e) What is the area of the triangle made by a diagonal and two sides.
Answers 2
a) Area = 5 × 4 = 20 sq cm
b) Perimetre = 2×length 2× breadth = 2 × 5 + 2 × 4 = 18 cm
c) Sides 10cm , 2 cm
Sides 20cm , 1 cm
Fractional lengths can also be the sides.
√ √ √
d) Length of diagonal is 52 + 42 = 25 + 16 = 41 cm
e) 10 sq.cm

2) Area of a rectangle is 64.

a) If one side is 16 then what is the length of the other side ?
b) The rectangle changes its dimensions keeping area unchanged. If one side
becomes 32 then what is the length of the other side.
c) It becomes a square by changing its side lengths without changing area .
What is its side length?
d) What is the area of the rectangle formed by a diagonal to this square?
Answers
a) Length of the other side is 64
16 = 4cm
64
b) If one side is 32 and area 64 then other side is 32 = 2cm

c) Side of the square is 64 = 8
d) 32 sq.cm

3) Area and perimetre of a rectangle are equal.

a) Write an equaltion by taking x as its side
b) Find the side length of the square
c) Write its area and perimetre
Answers
a) x2 = 4x → x = 4
b) Side is 4 unit
c) Area 42 = 16 sq.unit , perimetre= 4 × 4 = 16 cm

■ Let us think about triangles

⋆ Open Geogebra - Draw a triangle in the grid mode.Measure its area using area3
tool. It is calculated as 10 sq.unit taking base 4 and height 5
⋆ Move the apex of the triangle alog the grid line in such a way as to change its
shape .
⋆ Note that areas measure changes with the movement of the apex
⋆ Area of a triangle is determined by a side and altitude to that side.Recall the
concept of altitude of the triangle if necessary
⋆ Area of the triangle = 12 × one side × altitude to the side.

Discussion -2

1) a) Open geogebra , draw an equilateral triangle.A line parallel to its base to

the opposite vertex
b) Mark a point on the this line using ’point on the object’ tool.
c) Draw a triangle connecting base points and the point on the line , colour it
well
d) Measure the area of both triangles using area tool . Note that area are
equal
e) Animate the point , note the unchanging nature of area of triangle.
f) Write your observation and conclusion .
