medium.

III. Image size vs. Resolution - What’s the difference?

For Digital Media (Web, social media, etc.):

• Profile Pictures:
o Facebook: 180x180 pixels
o Instagram: 110x110 pixels
o LinkedIn: 400x400 pixels
• Cover Photos:
o Facebook: 820x312 pixels
o Twitter: 1500x500 pixels
o LinkedIn: 1584x396 pixels
• Post Images:
o Instagram: 1080x1080 pixels (square), 1080x1350 pixels (portrait), 1080x566
pixels (landscape)
o Facebook: 1200x630 pixels
o Twitter: 1024x512 pixels
o Pinterest: 1000x1500 pixels
• Web Banners:
o Full Banner: 468x60 pixels
o Leaderboard: 728x90 pixels
o Skyscraper: 160x600 pixels
o Large Rectangle: 336x280 pixels
• Standard Resolution for Web: 72 PPI (Pixels Per Inch)

For Print Media (Posters, Flyers, etc.):

• Flyers:
o A6: 105x148 mm (4.1x5.8 inches)
o A5: 148x210 mm (5.8x8.3 inches)
o A4: 210x297 mm (8.3x11.7 inches)
• Posters:
o Small (A3): 297x420 mm (11.7x16.5 inches)
© Copyright: Lewis Mkwabu
o Medium (A2): 420x594 mm (16.5x23.4 inches)
o Large (A1): 594x841 mm (23.4x33.1 inches)
o Extra Large (A0): 841x1189 mm (33.1x46.8 inches)
• Brochures:
o Tri-Fold (8.5x11 inches or 215.9x279.4 mm)
o Bi-Fold (8.5x11 inches or 215.9x279.4 mm)
• Business Cards:
o Standard: 85x55 mm (3.5x2 inches)
• Standard Resolution for Print: 300 DPI (Dots Per Inch)

Image Size and Resolution Considerations

1. Digital Media:
o Lower resolution (72 PPI) is usually sufficient for digital displays to ensure fast
loading times and compatibility across devices.
o Maintain aspect ratios to avoid distortion.
2. Print Media:
o Higher resolution (300 DPI) is necessary for print to ensure sharp and clear
images.
o Use CMYK color model for accurate color reproduction in printing.
o Ensure the image size matches the physical dimensions of the printed material
to avoid quality loss.
3. Aspect Ratio:
o Pay attention to aspect ratios to ensure images look correct on different
platforms.
o Common aspect ratios: 1:1 (square), 16:9 (widescreen), 4:3 (standard).

PRACTICAL TIPS

• Scaling Images: Avoid scaling up low-resolution images for print as this can lead to
pixelation and loss of quality.
• File Formats: Use appropriate file formats (JPEG for photos, PNG for images with
transparency, SVG for scalable vector graphics).
• Bleed and Margins: For print designs, include bleed areas (typically 3-5 mm) to ensure
no white edges appear after trimming. Maintain safe margins for important content.
