Homework Chapter 4 Map

Q1. What is called North line?

Ans: Maps usually contain an arrow marked with the letter ‘N at the upper right-hand corner. This
arrow shows the north direction and is called the north line.

Q2. How do symbols help in reading maps?

Ans: With the use of symbols, maps can be drawn easily and are simple to read, even if we don't
know the language of an area and therefore cannot ask someone for directions. They give a lot of
information in a limited space.

Q3 Differentiate between Map and a Plan

A map
I) It is a representation of earth’s surface or a part of it, on a sheet of paper.
II) It can be used for representing countries, states, villages, town etc.
A plan
i)It is a drawing of a small area on a large scale, on a sheet of paper.
ii)It is used for representing those things which can't be shown in map, for example, the length and
breadth of a room.

Q 4. What do you mean by the term ‘the scale of the map’?

Ans. Scale is the ratio between the actual distance on the ground and the distance shown on the map.

Q5. Write any three differences between large scale map and small scale map.

There are two types of maps on the basis of their size:

Large Scale Maps (i) Large scale maps show a small area in greater detail.

(ii) They are guide maps or topographic maps. Physical Map of India Political Map of India

(iii) Details of cities, towns, villages are shown.

(iv) The scale may be 1 cm = 50 m or 1 km.

Small Scale Maps (i) Small scale maps show a larger area in less detail.

(ii) They are wall maps, or atlas maps.

(iii) They show important features like mountains, plateaus, continents and countries.

(iv) Scale may be 1 cm = 100 km.

Large scale maps give more information than small scale map.
