TUTORIAL 1 - (Set 1 / Set 2)
KEY
RollNo______________________

1. (set 1)
Suppose the channel is specified using two parameters carrier frequency of 300MHz
and bandwidth of 50MHz. What is the range of frequencies used by this channel?
[2 Marks] [CO01][BTL2]
Key:
Low frequency=300 - 50MHz/2=275 MHz
High frequency=300 + 50MHz/2=325 MHz
Hence, the range is 275-325MHz

(Set 2)
Consider a channel with lower and upper frequencies of 200MHz and 600MHz
respectively. What is the carrier frequency and bandwidth of the channel?
[2 Marks] [CO01][BTL2]
Key:
Bandwidth=600-200=400MHz
Carrier frequency =200+(400/2)=400MHz

2. (Set 1) Briefly explain core network of cellular network if both GSM and UMTS are
coexist with diagram and explanations? Also, briefly explain about access part of
UMTS. [4 Marks] [CO1][BTL2]
Key:
Diagram -2 marks explanation-2 marks

(Set 2)
Illustrate (with diagram and explanations) the various components of GSM architecture
which provide the cellular service as well access to PSTN to the users briefly.
[4 Marks] [CO1][BTL2]
Diagram -2 marks explanation-2 marks

3. Pictorially represent the difference between Multiplexing and Multiple access with
suitable diagrams and explanation briefly.
[2 Marks] [CO01][BTL2]

Key:

(Set 2) Pictorially represent the need for duplexing and various methods of duplexing.
with suitable diagrams [2 Marks] [CO01][BTL2]
Key:
Need for duplexing
To separate the transmission from receiving so that they are separated from each other.

(a) (b)

(a) Transmission and receiving are not separated hence collision will occur between
the uplink and downlink.
(b) Transmission and receiving are separated hence no collision will occur between the
uplink and downlink.

Duplexing methods – FDD/TDD

4. (Set 1) Suppose Pt=1W, Pathloss=3W and Noise near the receiver is 2W. SNR in
Watts____. [1 Mark][CO01] [BTL 3]
Key:
Pr=1/3=0.33 Noise =2W => SNR=0.33/2=0.165
or
(in decibels)
(Pr)dB=10log10(1)=0dB Pathloss=10log10(3)=4.77dB Noise=10log(2)=3dB
Signal at receiver (S)dB=(Pr)dB=0dB-4.77dB=-4.77dB
SNR=(S)dB-(N)dB=-4.77dB-3dB=-7.77dB

(Set 2) Suppose Pt=4W, Pathloss=2W and Noise near the receiver is 1W. SNR i
n Watts____. [1 Mark][CO01]
[BTL 3]

Pr=4/2=2 Noise =2W => SNR=2/2=2

or
(In decibles)
(Pr)dB=10log10(4)=6dB Pathloss=10log10(2)=3dB Noise=10log(1)=0dB
Signal at receiver (S)=(Pr)dB=6dB-3dB=3dB

SNR=S-N=3dB-0dB=3dB

5. (Set 1) Consider a base station with fc = 900 MHz, cells of radius 1000 m, and non-
directional antennas. Under the free-space path loss model, what is the required transmit
power so that all terminals within the cell receive the signal with minimum received
power of 10 µW. How does this change if the system frequency is 5 GHz? [5 Marks]
[C001][BTL 3]
Key: Substituting in gt = 1 (nondirectional antennas),
λ = c/fc = .33 m, d = 100 m, Pr = 10µW
Substitute λ , Pr, d in free space model =>

Pt=14197W

(Set 2) Consider an base station with unit gain antenna (transmission power is 50W)
which covers a radius of 500m. What is suitable frequency to be used by the base
station so that minimum received power of 10W can be achieved? [Note: free-space
path loss model is applied]. Also, find out the suitable frequency if base station needs
to cover 1000m? [5 Marks] [C001][BTL 3]

Key: Substituting in gt = gr=1 (unit gain antennas), Pt = 50W, Pr=10W, d=500m

10=50*1*1*(lamda/4*3.14*500)^2
Lamda^2=(10*(4*3.14*500)^2)/50=7887680
Lamda=2808.5m
c/f=2808.5=>
f=(3*10^8)/2808.5=0.001*10^8=10^5Hz=0.1MHz

6. (Set 1) Suppose you are given the task of implementing BLE based KeyFob application
which help us to find the key by instructing the Bluetooth device attached to key to
make beep sound. [6 Marks][CO01][BTL 4]
• Does Bluetooth Extended Data Rate help in any way to this application if
BLE is replaced by Bluetooth Extended Data Rate? Add explanation to
support.
• What is methodology you will apply to save the batter power of Bluetooth
connected to key?
• Suggest suitable data channels to use for communication between mobile
and keyFob if 2 WiFi APs are operating on channel 1 or channel 11. [Note:
Add supportive explanations for above questions]
Key:
(i) Extended data rate of Bluetooth classic helps to increase data rate. For this scenario,
maximization of data rate doesn’t help
(ii) To save power: suitable value for peripheral interval and connection interval

(iii)
Both upper and lower set of channels are affected by WiFi channel 1 or 11. Hence,
middle set of data channels from 11 to 21 and also, 34, 35& 36
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
(Set 2) Suppose you are given the task of implementing BLE based KeyFob application
which help us to find the key by instructing the Bluetooth attached to key to make beep
sound. [6 Marks][CO01][BTL 4]
• Can we use Bluetooth beacons to implement this application or enhance the
operation of this application? Add your explanation to support your answer.
• What is methodology you will apply to extend the area of finding key from
few meters to few hundred meters?
• Suggest suitable data channels to use for communication between mobile
and keyFob if three WiFi APs are present and those APs are operating on
Wi-Fi channel 1,6 and 11 respectively.
[Note: Add supportive Explanations to all above questions]
Key:
i. Since beacon is playing role of broadcaster, it can be used find out multiple keys
at the same time. Or by using additional profile in addition to FindMe profile,
location service can be achieved.
ii. Using FEC (forward error correction)
iii. Only data channels 34, 35& 36
